The logical outcome of the acceptance of these new dates puts such a strain on chronological correlations between the 14C data and the archaeological record that the entire system would no longer be tenable if they were accepted. This paper examines in detail the problematic nature of these “uneasy correlations.”

We have assembled 420 14C dates, most of them previously published and a few provided directly by the excavators. The dates have been re-evaluated on the basis of their archaeological context and using analytical criteria. Bayesian modeling has been applied to the selected dates in relation to the given seriation of the EBA subperiods (EB I, II III, IV). Sites with 2 or more sequential sub-phases were individually modeled in order to define the transitions between the subperiods. The new chronology indicates that the EB I–II transition occurred site-dependently between 3200–2900 BC, with EB II–III around 2900 BC, and EB III–IV ∼2500 BC.

domestic) architecture of the southern Levant and its northern fringes, from the beginning of a Late Chalcolithic – EB 1
transition (dated ca 3800 BC – ca 3500 BC) through the end of EB 1 (ca 3500 BC – 3000 BC). Vernacular architecture is
one of a number of parameters by which it is possible to measure the nature and degree of social change that occurred
sometime late in a period that saw the onset of the first hierarchical, complex societies in the region. This essay attempts to
define and trace various traditions of house construction over this rather lengthy period and place them within their chronocultural
contexts. It presents a varied and relatively rich base of data, accompanied by my interpretation of that evidence.

It reviews that evidence in detail and suggests that evidence for Egyptians residing in the southern Levant is limited to a few sites. It also questions the extent of actual Nilotic immigrants residing in the region, especially as there is copious evidence that contemporaneously there were numerous and thriving communities of south Levantines.

Garfinkel's claim for a "Middle Chalcolithic" based on the pottery of early levels at Beth Shan excavated by G. M. FitzGerald. Basically it deconstructs that thesis as having no good basis in the archaeological record. It is an extract from the book: Early Beth Shan (Strata XIX-XIII): G. M. FitzGerald's Deep Cut on the Tell (University Museum Monograph 121). Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

It attempts to define and trace various traditions of house construction over this rather lengthy period, and place them within their chrono-cultural contexts. It is hoped that by presenting this varied and relatively rich base of data, it will allow scholars to better understand developments during these ca eight centuries of human activity in the region. Vernacular architecture is one of a number of parameters by which it is possible to measure the nature and degree of social change that occurred sometime late in a period that saw the onset of the first hierarchical, complex societies in the region.
