Rodents are considered as the main reservoir of Leptospira and transmission usually occurs through exposure to urine-contaminated environment. However, interactions between environment, rodent reservoir and human leptospirosis remain poorly studied. Here, we evaluated the concentration of Leptospira in surface water and captured rats in the city of Paris (France) from 2018 to 2020 using an integrity qPCR (Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction). All environmental samples (n = 1031) were positive for saprophytic Leptospira but pathogenic Leptospira P1 group were only found in 40% (n = 363; 2018) to 0% (n = 264; 2020) of samples. In the same time, analysis of 200 brown rat corpses trapped in the city, showed about 15% of positivity for Leptospira but the different method used for rats conservation (based on presence or absence of conservative agent) showed important variations in the Leptospira prevalence. Metagenomic analysis, based on rrs gene sequencing, was also carried out to evaluate the distribution of Leptospira in samples. Results could indicate that some species of Leptospira are found in surface waters as well as rats, but further study is needed to accurately describe the nature of the link between these two reservoirs. Quantification of Leptospira and pathogenic species description circulating inside animal reservoir living in the vicinity of freshwater in urban areas, will be helpful to understand the eco-epidemiology of leptospirosis and to establish prevention and intervention strategies, especially in the context of organization of recreative activity events in these urban areas.

Although this organism has been shown to cause community and nosocomial infections, there have been no documented cases of a laboratory acquired infections. Lessons learned from the event led to corrective actions which included modification of lab procedures, development of a biological inventory tracking and risk identification system and the establishment of an effective biological safety program.

Some researchers have considered servovalves with ideal geometry; however, such a model lapses when the servovalve operates within the null region wherein experiments showed that the flow leakage predominates. The authors present a new model that includes the leakage flow to describe as well as possible the flow through a servovalve. Parameters of the model can easily be determined using the data provided by the manufacturer.

Amlodipine initiation in all regimens showed statistically significant SBP reduction & goal attainment from baseline (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Patients receiving amlodipine as monotherapy or in combination with other agents had statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in SBP outcomes and in JNC VI goal attainment within 12-months of initiating treatment. Although these data must be interpreted within the limitations of the observational study design, this study suggests that amlodipine may be used in a variety of therapeutic combinations to improve SBP goal attainment among hypertensive adults.

WMLs and lacunar infarcts may provide a potential target for intervention strategies. This study assessed whether multi-component vascular care in Alzheimer's disease patients with cerebrovascular lesions slows progression of WMLs and prevents occurrence of new infarcts. Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial, including 123 subjects, compared vascular care with standard care in patients with Alzheimer's disease with cerebrovascular lesions on MRI. Progression of WMLs, lacunes, medial temporal lobe atrophy and global cortical atrophy were semi-quantitatively scored after 2-year follow-up. Results: Sixty-five subjects (36 vascular care, 29 standard care) had a baseline and a follow-up MRI and in 58 subjects a follow-up scan could not be obtained due to advanced dementia or death. Subjects in the vascular care group had less progression of WMLs as measured with the WML change score (1.4 vs. 2.3, p = 0.03). There was no difference in the number of new lacunes change in global cortical atrophy or medial temporal lobe atrophy between the two groups. Conclusions: Vascular care in patients with Alzheimer's disease with cerebrovascular lesions slows progression of WMLs. Treatment aimed at vascular risk factors in patients with early Alzheimer's disease may be beneficial, possibly in an even earlier stage of the disease.

These results are applied to models of particle propagation, and provide support for the trap/precipitation model of Melrose and White (PASAu 3, 379, 1979). The observed correlation between the size and flux asymmetries suggests that the injection must be symmetric in most flares.

The risk of an event is elevated by increasing contact among species and a global connectivity that provides rapid dissemination of infectious diseases regardless of origin. Virtually any pathogenic microbe could be used by bioterrorists. An attack may be difficult to distinguish from a naturally occurring infectious disease outbreak; however, consequences are likely to be similar. The agricultural sector is extremely vulnerable to bioterrorist attacks because animals and plants have little or no innate resistance to foreign pathogens and are not vaccinated or otherwise protected against these diseases. It is also important to note that weapons or delivery systems are not an issue because the animals and plants themselves are the primary vector for transferring agents. Many bioterrorism agents are zoonotic in orig...

Integrated into a micro-system architectured around a 68000 microprocessor and a VME bus using 8 data-flow microprocessors, the processor was used to automatically inspect 80, 000 pharmaceutical capsules with potential flaws in their shape or appearance, and to inspect printing on flasks and bottles at a rate of 5000 per hour. We have introduced a method to estimate the computation time of data-flow processors using codes from written data-flow programs.

The stabilizing feedback law, which respects the saturation and guarantees a semi-global stabilization, is obtained from system energetic properties and mass balance, without any kind of linearization. To illustrate the result, simulations are proposed.

Land development patterns characterized by fragmented and segregated land uses, low-density residential settlements, widespread strip commercial development along roadways, and lack of connectivity within and between neighborhoods – often referred to as "sprawl" – are drawing increasing scrutiny from researchers regarding their potential deleterious impacts on public health. Conversely, smarter growth development practices are gaining attention as an alternative solution that may improve public health. Public health is impacted by development practices in a variety of ways. Physical activity, air quality, water quality, ecological balance, and social networks are all impacted by the built environment. A prominent characteristic of sprawl development is resident dependency on the automobile. Automobiledependency plays a role in determining levels of physical activity, respiratory health ailments, environmental pollution and accompanying health impacts, and trauma associated with automobile accidents.
