This dissertation was developed to evaluate the potential of this process at a pilot scale, namely as pre-treatment of a waste water to supplement an undersized industrial waste water treatment plant (IWWTP) or as an alternative to design a new IWWTP to treat high flow of effluents during seasonal peaks, being oversized solely for this purpose. The effluent treatment was studied using hydrogen peroxide and ferric sulfate as catalyst in the Fenton Process, which allowed a good separation of sludge in the industrial pilot reactor. Several variables, including pH, amount of catalyst and hydrogen peroxide concentration were studied. It was found that these variables have influence on the degradation efficiency of the organic matter, as assessed by the chemical oxygen demand (COD) determination, COD concentrations around 700 mg O2/L, being obtained for the treated effluent. This value is below that stipulated by the Portuguese legislation for direct discharge of effluents in municipal collectors. Biodegradability tests were also performed by determining the biochemical oxygen demand (CBO5), suggesting that this process is efficient to obtain an effluent that can be further treated by a biological process since the CBO5/CQO ratio is near 0,5. The Fe:H2O2 ratio of 1:1 proved to be optimal in most of the tests performed, the obtained results showing that the Fenton Process could be feasible for the treatment of winery waste waters during the vintage season.
