Research paper thumbnail of Modeling batch kinetics of cesium, cobalt and strontium ions adsorption from aqueous solutions using hydrous titanium oxide

Radiochimica Acta, 2007

Hydrous titanium oxide was chemically synthesized and tested as adsorbent material for the remova... more Hydrous titanium oxide was chemically synthesized and tested as adsorbent material for the removal of cesium, cobalt and strontium ions from chloride waste solutions using batch technique. The influences of pH, contact time, and temperature have been reported. The uptake of both strontium and cobalt ions was found to be greater than that of cesium and the apparent sorption capacity of each ion increases with increase in temperature. Thermodynamic parameters such as changes in Gibbs free energy (ΔG 0), enthalpy (ΔH 0), and entropy (ΔS 0) were calculated. The numerical value of ΔG 0 decreases with an increase in temperature, indicating that the sorption reaction of each ion was more favorable at higher temperature. The positive values of ΔH 0 correspond to the endothermic nature of sorption processes and suggested that chemisorption was the predominant mechanism. Analysis of the respective rate data in accordance with three kinetic models revealed that the homogeneous particle diffusi...

Research paper thumbnail of Radiation grafting of acrylamide and maleic acid on chitosan and effective application for removal of Co(II) from aqueous solutions

Radiation Physics and Chemistry, 2018

In this work, the radiationinduced grafting of acrylamide (AAm) and maleic acid (MA) onto chitosan (CTS) was developed and optimized by determining the grafting percentage and efficiency as a function of grafting conditions such as AAm, MA, and CTS concentrations, and absorbed dose. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis (FTIR) confirmed the graft copolymerization. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) further characterized the grafted copolymers and showed their high thermal stability. Using batch sorption experiments and 60 Co as a radiotracer, poly(CTS-AAm) and poly(CTS-MA) were evaluated for Co(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The Co(II) removal increases with increasing time, pH, polymer, and Co(II) concentrations. Experimentally, P(CTS-AAm) and P(CTS-MA) show high sorption capacities of Co(II), i.e. 150 mg g-1 and 421 mg g-1 , respectively, which makes them potential sorbents of Co(II) for water and wastewater treatment. Finally, the Co(II) sorption was examined using sorption isotherm and kinetic models. The sorption was best fitted to Langmuir model which suggests the sorption is of chemisorption type. On the other hand, the sorption kinetics was best represented by Elovich model which also indicates the chemical nature of Co(II) sorption on P(CTS-AAm) and P(CTS-MA).

In this study, poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-co-sodium acrylate), P(VP-SA), was prepared by gamma radiation-induced copolymerization of VP and SA and utilized for the effective removal of cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper(II) from their aqueous solutions. Effect of comonomer composition and concentration besides the adsorbed dose on the conversion percentage and the reduced viscosity was studied. The formed copolymer was characterized using Fourier transform infrared and gel permeation chromatography analysis, and the thermal stability was examined using thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of the adsorption conditions such as contact time, pH, copolymer concentration, and initial metal ion concentration on the metal ion binding capacity was tested. Pseudofirst-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion adsorption models were used to explain the adsorption kinetics. Finally, the equilibrium adsorption data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption amounts on P(VP-SA) copolymer calculated by Langmuir equation were 425.60, 93.01 and 450.81 mg g −1 for Cu +2 , Ni +2 , and Co +2 , respectively.

These samples have been randomly selected from the Egyptian market from different manufacturers and of various origins. Some of these samples are imported from the world market and the others are locally made. The determined elements in these samples were: As, Au, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, La, Lu, Na, Ni, Rb, Sc, Ta, Th, U, W, Yb and Zn. Some of these elements were major or minor elements where others were trace elements. Standard reference material was used in this analysis. Some of the analyzed samples contain some toxic or undesirable elements such as As, Th and U. In addition some of these elements are present in comparatively high concentration.
