In the algorithm, random strips which would catch at least fifty percent of observations are thrown on the convex hull of the data in the variable space. The LMS line lies exactly at the middle of the narrowest strip.

Three main factors influence these experiments: grid shape, grid density, and needle length. In statistical literature, several experiments depending on these factors have been designed to increase the efficiency of the estimators of p and to use all the information as fully as possible. We wrote the package BuffonNeedle to carry out the most common forms of Buffon's needle experiments. In this article we review statistical aspects of the experiments, introduce the package BuffonNeedle, discuss the crossing probabilities and asymptotic variances of the estimators, and describe how to calculate them using Mathematica.

These four statistics are expressed as a function of one random variable-the angle between the vectors of unrestricted and restricted residuals. The exact and nominal sampling distributions of this angle are derived to illuminate some facts about the four statistics. Alternatively, we offer that the angle itself can be used as a test statistic. A Mathematica program is also written to carry out the approach.

In recent years, researchers have proposed numerous strategies and procedures to identify the outliers. A Mathematica package PURO is introduced which implements seven methods from the latest and most respected outlier detection procedures in the statistics literature.

Though not as popular as the Cp plot, Spjotvoll’s Fp and Pp plots are also used in the variable selection procedure. The Cp, Fp and Pp plots are useful in their own right. If the interest is the direct measure of the amount of bias of the submodels and a distributional assumption is not made about the error term, a Cp or Fp plot is used. If a formal testing procedure is to be performed, then a Pp plot is employed. A geometrical approach is used in order to propose an alternative plot that unifies all the information in these three plots, and that has some advantages over them. A Mathematica package has been written to implement the approach.
