The aim of this study was to define a methodology able to analyse the foot motion using an inerti... more The aim of this study was to define a methodology able to analyse the foot motion using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) integrated in the midsole of the running shoe. Nineteen subjects performed two tests: an incremental running test in order to determine their individual anaerobic threshold (IAT) and, 2-7 days later, a constant-speed test according to their speed at IAT. The foot motion at the sagittal plane was analysed using Functional Data Analysis (FDA) techniques. This methodology enables to determine the variations in the runners´ steps comparing two fatigue states.

Data warehouses, multidimensional databases, and OLAP tools are based on the multidimensional (MD... more Data warehouses, multidimensional databases, and OLAP tools are based on the multidimensional (MD) modeling. Lately, several approaches have been proposed to easily capture main MD properties at the conceptual level. These conceptual MD models, together with a precise management of metadata, are the core of any related tool implementation. However, the broad diversity of MD models and management of metadata justifies the necessity of a universally understood standard definition for metadata, thereby allowing different tools to share information in an easy form. In this paper, we make use of the Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM) to represent the main MD properties at the conceptual level in terms of CWM metadata. Then, CWM-compliant tools could interoperate by exchanging their CWM-based metadata in a commonly understood format and benefit of the expressiveness of the MD model at the conceptual level.

The new generation of videogame interfaces such as Microsoft's Kinect opens the possibility of im... more The new generation of videogame interfaces such as Microsoft's Kinect opens the possibility of implementing exercise programs for physical training, and of evaluating and reducing the risks of elderly people falling. However, applications such as these might require measurements of joint kinematics that are more robust and accurate than the standard output given by the available middleware. This paper presents a method based on particle filters for calculating joint angles from the positions of the anatomical points detected by PrimeSense's NITE software. The application of this method to the measurement of lower limb kinematics reduced the error by one order of magnitude, to less than 10º, except for hip axial rotation, and it was advantageous over inverse kinematic analysis, in ensuring a robust and smooth solution without singularities, when the limbs are out-stretched and anatomical landmarks are aligned.

Monitoring of Tacrolimus as Rescue Therapy in Pediatric Liver Transplantation

The introduction of tacrolimus as rescue therapy represents a significant advance in the preventi... more The introduction of tacrolimus as rescue therapy represents a significant advance in the prevention of late graft failure and second liver transplantation. The authors report the blood level monitoring of tacrolimus as a rescue therapy in 21 children who underwent liver transplantation, and they report the dose-concentration relationship in the presence or absence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in these patients. This was a retrospective study conducted from May 1993 to January 1997. Indication for the conversion from cyclosporine (CsA) to tacrolimus were acute rejection (62%), chronic rejection (33%), and CsA toxicity (5%). Mean daily dose in the first month was 0.32 mg/kg, whereas at the end of the follow-up period it was 0.14 mg/kg. Tacrolimus mean whole blood concentration levels were between 7.1 ng/ml and 9.4 ng/ml, without significant differences over time. Mean daily doses in HCV+ and HCV- patients were 0.08 and 0.24 mg/kg, respectively (p < 0.01), and mean concentrations were 8.3 and 8.4 ng/ml (NS). HCV+ children required a mean dose three times lower than the dose used in HCV- children to obtain the same tacrolimus trough blood level. Therefore, doses in HCV+ children must be decreased to achieve levels within the therapeutic range.

La acidosis ruminal es una enfermedad metabólica que altera la fermentación y la población microb... more La acidosis ruminal es una enfermedad metabólica que altera la fermentación y la población microbiana del rumen. En el presente estudio se evaluó, in vitro, el efecto de un ionóforo (lasalocida, L) y dos amortiguadores (bicarbonato de sodio, BS; sesquicarbonato de sodio, SS) sobre el pH, durante 8 h, y la concentración de ácidos grasos volátiles (AGV), lactato, bacterias totales (BT,) celulolíticas (BC) y productoras de lactato (BPL) a las 3 y 6 h de incubación. El substrato fue 70% grano de sorgo y 30% alfalfa. Los tratamientos (T) fueron los siguientes: T1 = testigo (sólo substrato); T2 = T1+30 ppm L; T3 = T1+1.5% SS; T4 = T1+1.5% BS; T5 = T1+30 ppm L+1.5% SS; T6 = T1+30 ppm L+1.5% BS. La adición de BS solo o con lasalocida (T4 y T6) aumentó AGV y redujo la proporción acetato:propionato (p≤ ≤ ≤ ≤ ≤0.05). Los tratamientos con BS (T4), BS más lasalocida (T5) y SS más lasalocida (T6), redujeron la producción de lactato (p≤ ≤ ≤ ≤ ≤0.05), pero el pH fue superior a 6.2 durante 5 h de incubación. La concentración de BT y BC estuvo dentro del intervalo normal en todos los tratamientos. Lasolacida solo o con BS disminuyó (p≤ ≤ ≤ ≤ ≤0.05) la concentración de BPL a las 3 h de incubación; sin embargo, a las 6 h la concentración de BPL no fue diferente (p>0.05) entre tratamientos. De acuerdo con estos resultados, lasolacida no mejora el efecto de BS en la acidosis causada por la fermentación microbiana de carbohidratos que se degradan fácilmente en el rumen. To avoid reduced accrual of cases diagnosed by adult physicians, adult IBD units in referral centers were invited to participate. Seventy-eight centers participated in our survey. Rates of incidence were calculated using age-stratified population-based epidemiologic data. Incidence rates were compared for the last 14 years (1996-2009). To avoid reduced accrual of cases diagnosed by adult physicians, adult IBD units in referral centers were invited to participate. Seventy-eight centers participated in our survey. Rates of incidence were calculated using age-stratified population-based epidemiologic data. Incidence rates were compared for the last 14 years (1996-2009). The sex distribution was 56.4% male, with higher predominance for CD (59.3%) as compared to UC (52.8%) and IBD unclassified (53.2%) (P = 0.012).
