We demonstrate a 7-core erbium doped fiber amplifier employing side pumping using tapered multimo... more We demonstrate a 7-core erbium doped fiber amplifier employing side pumping using tapered multimode fiber. The amplifier has multicore inputs and outputs which can be readily spliced to multicore transmission fiber for amplifying space division multiplexed signals. Gain over 25dB was obtained in each of the cores over a 40-nm bandwidth covering C-band.

A broadband pulse is focused on the fiber surface with lens L1 (focal length 5 cm) which has a confocal range larger than the fiber diameter. The light reflected by the fiber is collected by L1 and directed with beamsplitter B.S. to lens L2 which focuses the light into fiber F. Fiber F acts like a pinhole and discriminates against light that is not retro-reflected. The output from fiber F is sent into a spectrometer and the spectrogram recorded on a CCD is analyzed to retrieve the fiber diameter. The detected light comes mainly from interfaces A and B of the fiber with air which have the largest index
