Asynchronous online discussion (AOD) can provide an interactive educational experience through fo... more Asynchronous online discussion (AOD) can provide an interactive educational experience through formation of learning communities that enable students to develop professional knowledge and critical thinking skills as they engage with colleagues and instructors. We find significant differences between undergraduate and graduate student perceptions of the efficacy of AOD. In this paper, we explore the pedagogical benefits of AOD and describe considerations that guide how they are designed and managed effectively and efficiently. Additionally, we report the results of a survey that measures student perceptions of the extent to which AOD provided a positive educational experience and contributed to their learning.

An institutional investment policy statement (IIPS) is a formal document designed to help guide t... more An institutional investment policy statement (IIPS) is a formal document designed to help guide the investment process. Although this document is not currently required by regulation, it is a useful tool in managing a pool of assets in the best interests of the beneficiaries. In the volatility of modern markets, letting emotions and short-term trends dictate an investment strategy can easily happen. The IIPS is designed to help mitigate this natural tendency and instead focus on long-term goals. The primary factors considered in creating an IIPS are objectives, risk tolerance, and unique constraints. Each type of institutional investor (e.g., pension plans, insurance companies, endowments, foundations, and banks) will have a different blend of needs within this framework and will require a customized plan for investing.

Psychology researchers have long attempted to identify educational practices that improve student... more Psychology researchers have long attempted to identify educational practices that improve student learning. However, experimental research on these practices is often conducted in laboratory contexts or in a single class, threatening the external validity of the results. In this paper, we establish an experimental paradigm for evaluating the benefits of recommended practices across a variety of authentic educational contexts – a model we call ManyClasses. The core feature is that researchers examine the same research question and measure the same experimental effect across many classes spanning a range of topics, institutions, teacher implementations, and student populations. We report the first ManyClasses study, which examined how the timing of feedback on class assignments, either immediate or delayed by a few days, affected subsequent performance on class assessments.
