However many authors underlined that the way co-creation is implemented and operationalized remain unexplored. The paper aims at exploring the reasons why co-creation leads to reframing the development processes with the implications for learning processes. Results will detail the way development and learning loops occurred. Four main observations are proposed: aCo-creation requires including new actors in the systems, resulting in organizational change bDevelopment processes are separated in two parts. cThe issue of product coherence and image is central to the elaboration of the interactive dispositions with the clients. dThe Design of co-creation encounter is not based on co-creation principles. Discussion follows on the way co-creation transforms existing « learning while innovating » frames.

The use of ambiance narratives remains to be explained in such a context as the way they are designed, the process by which they are shared, interpreted and used by the different stakeholders in order to span boundaries has not been explored by research. Based on the case study observations and on the theory of boundary objects and boundary discourse, a new development method is pro- posed where innovation involves heterogenic stakeholders.

Because the fuzzy front end involves high levels of uncertainty, this article first analyzes the dimensions of fuzziness and then describes two in-depth case studies. The rich and contrasted insights into one success and one failure of a high-tech company identify how managers can use learning strategies to reduce fuzziness. Qualitative investigations based on interviews with managers and team members responsible for development projects reveal how the choice of specific learning strategies can address one or all three dimensions of fuzziness. By contrasting successes and failures, the study reveals how specific learning strategies can lead to an efficient reduction in fuzziness during the early stages of development. We identified broad sets of actions, including competencies recruitment, use of guiding visions, use of personal networks to find appropriate solutions, and processes that help connect client expectations with firm solutions. The detailed description of adopted means outlines how managers can succeed in the early stages of development by mastering organizational learning tools.

Lead User's theory (LUT) focused mainly on the process by which user innovation may be transformed into commercial product. However, when LUT methodology was proven successful for products such as scientific instrument, sports equipment or even medical instruments, very few experiences were reported for services. Thus, the specific contribution of the paper is to adapt lead user's theory and practice to the specific case of the intangible processes and services such as Banks, Call centers, etc...., in the purpose of improving efficiency of innovative efforts. In a first theoretical part, the paper reviews service characteristics which prevent adoption of LUT methods. Four main factors are identified and investigated in details: intangibility, inseparability, process based aspects of services and investment cycle in services. Based on these analyses, the paper suggests a specific framework for applying LUT methodologies in the case of services. It details first recommendation on the way to select potential lead users. Then, it recommends the way lead users should be associated and involved so that potential innovation may be proposed. The concept of communities applied to services is proposed and discussed from managerial point of view. Perspective of further research is then detailed.
