This integrated approach is based on driving forces that promote the desired separation for different separation techniques. A set of algorithms needed by the integrated approach for sequencing and design of distillation columns and for generating hybrid separation schemes are presented. The main feature of these algorithms is that they provide a "visual" solution which also appears to be near optimal in terms of energy consumption. Several illustrative examples highlighting the application of the integrated approach are also presented.

This framework is based on the driving force approach, which takes advantage of differences in chemical/physical properties between two co-existing phases in a separation unit. A set of algorithms has been developed within this framework for design of simple and complex distillation columns, for sequencing of distillation columns, determination of operating conditions and for generating hybrid separation schemes as well as retrofit of distillation columns. The main feature of all these algorithms is that they provide a "visual" solution that also appears to be near optimal in terms of energy consumption. Several illustrative examples highlighting the application of the integrated approach are also presented.

For each research program, this report describes the research objectives, lists the active projects, briefly describes the current status and achievements of each active project, and finally, lists publications and conference presentations from each research program. The preparation of this report involved a two-step procedure. In the first step, the cocoordinators for each research program make their reports based on the monthly meetings they organize with the involved co-workers. These reports were collected and edited by the two directors of CAPEC into a final version. The following coworkers of CAPEC served as co-coordinators during the period of this report.

The solution relies on process engineering and plant knowledge combined with AI tools like ontology and rule-based reasoning. The aim is to enhance the basis for rapid and intelligent decision-making and increase human performance when abnormal situations occur. The solution is based on "Multilevel Flow Modeling" (MFM), which is a modeling language that builds on a systematic representation of relations between objectives and functions of plant equipment in a means-ends structure. The aim of MFM in this context is to develop models that allows for reasoning about causes and consequences of events, or upsets in process plants, such as oil and gas production facilities. A key feature of MFM is its compatibility with human cognition and results of MFM reasoning can therefore be communicated to operators in...

This paper provides a systematic analysis of the property models with special emphasis on relations between separation task, equilibrium properties and energy consumption. The presented analysis helps to establish the role of properties and the property model in design of separation by distillation. Based on the roles of properties and property models, a general guideline that serves as a useful roadmap for design and analysis of various types of separation with distillation is proposed. Finally, the roles and the guidelines are highlighted through simple illustrative examples.
