Klinik, Univ.

By analyzing six case histories from "hereditary health" court decisions during the years 1942-45, we illuminate how the law of 1933 was applied in Austria. Coming to the present, we put historical events into a more general perspective by reviewing recent debates and presenting a case history from today. There are similarities between the past and present decisions regarding carrying out sterilization of mentally handicapped persons, but the justification given for doing so has changed. The argument of today "protection of the individual" supplants "racial hygiene".

Following his forced emigration to the USA in 1938 he became a world-famous child therapist, psychoanalyst, scientist and professor of medical psychology at the Department of Psychiatry, UCLA. The most significant areas of Eksteins extensive scientific output are described in an attempt to do justice to his contributions to psychotherapy and child psychiatry. Eksteins introduction of a special technique for treating psychotic children with psychoanalytic psychotherapy was of major importance. His underlying concept of schizophrenic psychosis and borderline personality disorders in children is outlined. Further, we have tried to show in what way his contributions to psychoanalytic theory and techniques were influenced by his profound knowledge of philosophy an...

Histological examination revealed colliquation necrosis and a striking eosinophilia. The latter feature, which was not reproducible in an animal experiment, may be related to a defect of leucocyte locomotion in the present case.

Of the patients, 73.7% were in a state of minimal responsiveness (vigilance score < 7 WVS) on admission. We evaluate the course of rehabilitation and the outcome 6 months after the end of the inpatient-period. The average stay of 15.5 weeks is strikingly low. The average intensity of therapy comes to about 16 units per week including strategies of rehabilitative education. The incidence of good rehabilitation was 21%, whereas almost 45% of patients displayed severe impairment. Although further improvements were found in almost 40% of patients 6 months later, these only slightly changed the overall picture of the GOS values. More than 3/4 returned to their families after rehabilitation, often despite great functional impairment. A return to the former environment outside the family (kindergarten, school) was, however, possible in 2/3 of the subjects. The proportion of minimally responsive patients fell from 73.7% to 18.4% during the stationary rehabilitation phase. After a further 6 months (follow up), 36.4% of the originally minimally responsive patients achieved a GOS value of > 5.

All of them reported that they had been traumatised children in residential care (1946-1975: 70 %, 1976-1990: 25 %). The interviews primarily aimed at providing expert estimates of the consequences of individual traumas in order to establish a valid basis for compensation. The later evaluation of the interviews allows insight in to forms and quantity of subjective experiences of trauma and of their consequences for later life; although-due to the sampling procedures-no reliable generalisations about the entire system of Social Pedagogy of the City of Vienna are possible. All 130 one-hour long, clinical-biographic interviews were conducted by the same expert (who has qualifications in general and in adolescent psychiatry). 98.5 % report experiences of psychic, 96.2 % of bodily and 46.9 % of...
