Information is new knowledge, which leads to a change in actions of people exposed to it. The concept of information needs and seeking behaviour of undergraduate has been of great concern to stakeholders especially in developing countries where access to information is seen as a mirage. Researchers have made it known that, the way students organize their learning and search for academic information could be considered very crucial to their overall performance at the end of the day. Thus, information needs and seeking behaviour is pertinent for undergraduate academic performance. Notwithstanding, no study has been conducted on undergraduate information needs and seeking behaviour at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. In this light, the study examined information needs and seeking behaviour of undergraduates in the University of Ilorin. Survey design was adopted using a questionnaire as instrument for data collection. A simple random sampling technique was employed to sample twenty (20) respondents each from the twelve (12) faculties in the university. To achieve the objectives of the study, five (5) research questions were developed to guide the study. The results indicate that undergraduate use information sought to prepare for examination, test and assignment while information sources available from which the respondents seek information are books, journals, Internet, etc. The study recommends that adequate and relevant information materials should be acquired so as to meet undergraduate's information needs.

It also evaluated the modes and periods of course delivery for their appropriateness and adequacy to achieve the goal of making the students lifelong learners. The survey design was adopted for the study and the content analysis method was used to compare the course contents of the use of the library programmes in the universities with the five information literacy competencies. Results of the study showed that the use of the library curricula contained items that teach the five information literacy competencies including abilities to locate, access, retrieve, evaluate and use information effectively and efficiently. It was also found that the course delivery period in the universities was usually one semester of 12 weeks and the usual mode of delivery was classroom face-to-face approach. The findings implied that the contents of the course were suitable to make students lifelong learners but the mode and period of delivery may not be fit enough for the purpose. The practical implication of the findings of the study is that the universities should review the timing and methods of course delivery such that it would impart lifelong learning skills to the students. The findings of the study would assist universities and other higher education institutions to place high priority on the lifelong learning goals in designing the use of the library programmes.

This has changed the 21 st century library users as they have become more technologically inclined thus seek faster ways of getting information to meet felt needs. This spurred predictions that the reference librarian charged with the responsibility of rendering personalized information services to library users will no longer be relevant. This paper therefore used a literature based approach to investigate the relevance of reference librarians in the information age.. To achieve this, the authors used sub-headings to explicitly buttress the relevance of the reference librarian in the midst of changing technologies and recommend preferred roles for the reference librarian in a bid to further sustain relevant in the information age. They conclusively asserted that the question of whether or not a reference librarian is rele...

Online resources are important for distance learning students in their academic pursuit but anxiety about the use of computer can pose a major setback to their pursuit of excellence in academic especially as Distance Learning Students (DLS). However, not much focus has been given to a study as this in Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted using a questionnaire as instrument for data collection. Multistage sampling technique was used to sample 270 respondents. Five (5) research questions and one (1) hypothesis were developed to guide the study. The results show that distance learning students from both universities use online resources for educational purposes and general knowledge, positive relationship between computer anxiety and online resources. The study recommends that universities should subscribe for more relev...

While we all struggle to gain support for our libraries, there is need to “talk-up” the library by showcasing its relevance to national development in the 21st century. As a result of this, there is need for a text on advocacy in Africa and beyond, which prompted this chapter on strategizing for library advocacy. The chapter looks at introduction to library advocacy, building team for library advocacy, strategies for developing and getting messages out in library advocacy, media of library advocacy, and getting feedback and appraisal of library advocacy. The chapter concludes by affirming that strategy for library advocacy will create a roadmap for promoting libraries among stakeholders, thus retaining its place of pride as a social and information-based institution. Thereafter, recommendations were made on how to ensure effective s...
