Proceedings of the 11th International Dentistry Scientific Meeting (IDSM 2017), 2018

Unfortunately, children with dental anxiety tend to resist dental treatment and behave uncooperatively during dental procedures. Dental treatment is known to be stressful and is often associated with a physiological response; therefore, dental anxiety can lead to physiological changes in the body, including increases in the respiratory rate, heart rate, and blood pressure. The psychophysiological response due to dental anxiety is related to an increase in autonomic nervous system activity. Anxiety is a basic emotion resulting from individual's defense mechanisms; therefore, the respiratory changes in an anxiety response are controlled by the brain center that is related to emotion. Respiration is regulated mainly in the brainstem, but complex interactions between the brainstem, limbic system, and cortical structure of the brain affect the final output of respiration. The amygdala, part of the limbic system, is responsible for processing negative emotions; therefore, measuring physiological responses, such as the respiratory rate, plays an important role in behavioral assessment. This paper presents the respiratory rate as one of the physiological responses to dental anxiety.

Methods: The authors conducted a clinical trial involving 16 children ages 6–11 with at least 8 black-stained teeth. Subjects were randomized into 2 groups and instructed to rinse with chlorine dioxide or chlorhexidine mouthrinse twice daily. At baseline and after 7 days, samples of black stain plaque were collected, and Actinomyces sp. was cultured. Its bacterial viability was evaluated using an 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide assay. Results: After 7 days, Actinomyces sp. viability was remarkably reduced in both groups, and there was a significantly higher reduction in viability in the 0.1% chlorine dioxide group than there was in the 0.1% chlorhexidine group. Conclusion: Mouthrinse containing 0.1% chlorine dioxide has a greater antibacterial effect again...

This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of virgin coconut oil (VCO) mousse at different concentrations against S. mutans biofilm in children with ECC. Cell viability was analyzed to estimate biofilm growth on VCO at different concentrations (0.8%, 8%, and 80%) by crystal violet assay in 96-microwell plates and by measuring colony-forming units. S. mutans colonies were counted on brain heart infusion agar plates. Inter-group trials were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (P<.05). The concentration of 80% VCO mousse showed significant results compared with that of VCO mousse at 0.8% and 8% concentrations, showing equal results obtained with the positive control which is casein phosphopeptide-amorphus calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP). VCO mousse (80%) is an effective antibacterial agent against ...

If they remain untreated, they can impact a child’s oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and trigger the release of salivary cortisol. Many research studies have been conducted to determine the influence of dental caries on the OHRQoL and salivary cortisol levels, but none has described the correlation between them. This research examined the correlation between the OHRQoL and the salivary cortisol levels in children with caries. They were placed in a waiting room, and their blood pressure was measured. The experimental design of this clinical research was statistically analyzed using independent t-tests to compare decreased blood pressure between the intervention and control groups. Results: The result of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in decreased blood pressure with the intervention of the pop-up book Aku dan gigiku. As dental anxiety leads to undesirable distresses, it generates physiological changes such as blood pressure. Interventions should thus be undertaken to reduce dentalanxiety, and the pop-u...

Materials and Methods: Ninety teachers from 14 public elementary schools in Central Jakarta were randomly chosen to fill in a questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the Kendall rank correlation. Results: A significant relationship (weak negative linear correlation) between teaching experience and teacher's attitude (p<0.05) was observed. No significant correlation between attitude and knowledge and the other variables were noted. Conclusions: A significant relationship between teaching experience and the teacher's attitude toward dental trauma in children was observed. In general, the attitude toward dental trauma in children was positive whereas, knowledge about dental trauma was insufficient among the teachers.

Pop-up books are often used as an educational medium for children because they present interesting illustrations and are easy to understand. Conclusion: As a medium of dental health education, pop-up books can contribute significantly to reducing anxiety in children.

Research paper thumbnail of Differences in the Effects of 0.05% and 0.1% Propolis Flavonoids on in Vitro Biofilm Formation by Streptococcus Mutans from Children’s Dental Plaque

Materials and Methods: S. mutans isolated from children's dental plaque was assayed for biofilm formation in 96-microwell plates using crystal violet. Results: The effects on S. mutans biofilm formation were the same for propolis flavonoids administered at concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1% (p>0.01). Conclusion: A 0.05% propolis flavonoids concentration was deemed as effective as a 0.1% concentration at inhibiting S. mutans biofilm formation.

We analyzed the effectiveness of virgin coconut oil (VCO) mousse at concentrations of 0.8%, 8%, and 80% against S. mutans and C. albicans biofilms in children with ECC. Cell viability was analyzed to estimate the growth of biofilm cells using crystal violet 0.5% in 96-well plates and colony-forming units to count S. mutans colonies in brain heart infusion broth and C. albicans in saborous dextrose agar (SDA) medium. Intergroup trials were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (p < 0.05). Viability tests of 80% VCO mousse showed different statistical significance results compared with 0.8% and 8% VCO mousse and equal results to casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate. VCO mousse 80% was effective as an antibacteria...

Inappropriate management when trauma occurs can complicate the prognosis of the tooth. The majority of injuries to children's teeth occur in the school environment and teachers play an essential role in providing first aid at the accident site. However, the school teacher’s knowledge regarding first aid dental avulsion is inadequate. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of an animated video (First Aid Management of Dental Avulsion) on the knowledge of primary school teachers. Materials and methods: This clinical experimental study comprised 54 teachers from 13 public elementary schools in Central Jakarta who were chosen randomly to fill out a questionnaire before and after watching the animated video. Results: Data analysis using the Wilcoxon comparative test showed that there was a statistically significant increase (P
