The main goal of the study is to examine the relationship between foreign language reading comprehension (in English and German) and the Internet use (time spent on the Internet, the Internet addiction). The results of the research confirmed negative relationship between the time spent online and reading comprehension in German. Internet addiction is positively correlated with reading comprehension in English, this relationship is influenced by demographic variables of students’ gender and the type of school attended.

Thanks to the pragmalinguistic typology, one can analyze the communication process in a more detailed way and detect that translating and stringing together translated sentences is not enough for the respondent to understand what the speaker wants to express. For this purpose, it is very important to know how to produce syntactically and semantically meaningful sentences as well as how to use adequate linguistic and non-linguistic means. The main aim of this article is to point out the importance of pragmalinguistic typology, which plays an essential role to describe semantically the causal constructions in historical texts.

It also describes how it is possible to improve the reading skills of the students based on the pragmalinguistic typology which has a decisive influence in developing the pupil's communicative competence. Pragmalinguistics is intended to enable an individual to recognize different texts and to understand exactly what the author wants to highlight. For this it is necessary to know how to produce semantically and syntactically acceptable sentences with the appropriate choice of words. Our basis is the cognitive theory of Eve Sweetser. According to her teaching an utterance is based on three cognitive linkage levels: the propositional, the epistemic and the speech act level.

Together with the other factors of motivational structure: Intrinsic motivation, Personal goals, Attractivity of foreign language community, and Worries about learning, it creates motivational profile of foreign language (FL) learners. The analysis is based on the theoretical concept of foreign language motivational self-system by Dörnyei. The research aim was to find out the perception of learning experience and the level of its dependence on the category of the Associations with the expression “German” in the selected categories. Moreover, it was to find out the differences in perception of learning experience, motivational structure, and the length of foreign language studying. The research sample consisted of German FL learners from six different lower-secondary schools within Slovakia. Motivational Structure Questionnaire was used as a research tool to obtain the research data. The data were processed by the selecte...

The aim was to investigate dynamics and stability of the variable tolerance of ambiguity in the process of learning a foreign language through the means of specifically designed linguistic intervention program. The investigation aimed to find out the impact of the intervention called The Linguistic Intervention Program in the process of foreign language learning and tolerance of ambiguity in the foreign language performance. Moreover, the purpose was to investigate long-lasting changes in the selected periods, after one year. The focus was put on the ability to create a cognitive structure, especially the ability to achieve cognitive structuration. The linguistic intervention program represented a method of active social learning, and autonomous learning. The approaches we used were the following: relaxation, cooperative techniques, communication techniques, and the techniques aimed at social perception and intercultural co...

It also identifies the mistakes made by the learners in the research sample, causes of their mistakes, and suggests ways of eliminating these errors. Methods: The paper presents the research data collected using quantitative (questionnaire and achievement test) and qualitative (lesson observation and semi-structured interview) methods. The data are analysed, compared, and conclusions for school practice are drawn. Results: The main research findings show how the three tenses are taught, identify the impact of the ways they are taught on the ability of lower and upper secondary school learners to use them, and outline the errors they commit. The authors seek to explain the errors and suggest possible ways of eliminat...

Subsequently, we investigated the relation between syntactic ability and chosen variables. We used the following research methods:

The aim of this research is to discover how the emotions of the 'narrow' categorizer affect the selection of expressive factors in request formation (L1) in social situations (social distance/proximity with/without social power). The research was conducted at the university and 148 students participated. The results indicate a low extent of emotional factors´ selection and their combinations by "narrow" categorizers during request formation in the mother tongue. The research confirmed our assumption that emotions of the 'narrow' categorizer affect language processing and request formation in dependence on social situation.

Cognition is related to mental behavior which an individual usually uses by problem solving. Emotions represent expressive factors such as compliments/sweeteners, intensificators etc. In our case, it is a simulation of global processing of language information by a broad categorizer during social problem solving. The research was carried out at the university and 148 students took part. The results indicate that the 'broad categorizer' uses compliments, pre-sequences, politeness factors and their combinations in situations with social distance and power. On the other hand, in situations with social proximity and power, he/she uses language models with politeness factors, intensificators and post-sequences/supporting details.

The point of that was to examine an influence of the linguistic intervention programme on reading comprehension skills. The linguistic intervention programme represents a method of active social learning, autonomous learning and a set of strategies and specific methods of foreign language learning. Two hundred and twenty one university students took part in this experiment, where we used as research methods-an observation and a test of foreign-language proficiency focusing on reading comprehension skills (English, German). The results have shown interesting findings in the direction of supporting or obstructing variable on the process of reading comprehension in a foreign language.

The research was focused on the investigation of frequency and combination of factors of requ gory l power. Cross-tabulation analysis and association rules were applied. The results indicated that the broad categorizers began with social factors, continued with expressive, language, and finish with social. The narrow categorizers began with expressive, continued with social, and finished with language factors.

However, not enough attention is always paid to cognitive characteristics of the interlocutor. These characteristics as well as context and social specifics of communication influence communication behaviour in foreign language utterance. The aim of our paper is to examine the relationship between cognitive style 'category width' and social and expressive factors in politeness speech acts formulated in requests in mother tongue (Slovak) and foreign language (English, Spanish and German).
