Social media is understood as a key connector of peoples and cultures in the 21st century, which ... more Social media is understood as a key connector of peoples and cultures in the 21st century, which is why it is also considered a nexus and hotbed of popular culture. From memes to online movements, this paper analyzes how social media can be a driving force to encourage participation within popular culture and thereby stimulating its growth and propagation. This paper draws from popular online examples within the past decades to demonstrate how social media influenced cultural behaviors, demonstrating that the participatory framework is vital in the understanding of popular internet culture. The cases to be discussed are Project Chanology, the 2008 online feud between 4Chan and the Church of Scientology; Gangnam Style, the hit 2012 Korean song from the singer PSY; and Ice Bucket Challenge, the 2014 online movement to fund research of and bring awareness to the ALS disease.
