National and local initiatives are required to support UNESCO’s DESD initiative. Some countries have well developed supporting statements, though practice is commonly inconsistent with guidance. For example, Australia’s comprehensive national strategy for sustainable living has an aim ‘to equip all Australians with knowledge and skills to live sustainably’ (Australian Government Department of Environment, Water, heritage and the Arts, 2009, p. 4). The Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative provides a comprehensive strategy for EfS in schools (AuSSI, 2009), whilst the National Curriculum to be initiated in 2011 identifies EfS as a sustainability theme (ACAR, 2010). State governments also have local guidance for implementation of EfS in schools; for example the New South Wales Government provides comprehensive guidance for schools to develop a School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) to implement EfS through the curriculum, grounds and resources management (NSW Government, 2010). Although guidance for EfS is in place in many countries, the message is not impacting significantly on lifestyles, which remain unsustainable. Australia, which is broadly typical of developed countries, would require the equivalent of the resources of four planet Earths to maintain average levels of consumption (EPA Victoria, 2010). Greenhouse gas emissions per capita are also among the highest in the world, which is influenced by the federal government’s reliance on cheap coal as fuel for power stations, ideology, epistemology and pedagogy: barriers and drivers to eduCation for sustainability in sCienCe eduCation

The environmental education provided at early childhood is considered particularly important because when children will grow up they will be responsible for making decisions about environmental issues and problems. The objective is to create a society of primarily children taught to respect the environment and thereafter adults conscious of their environment (Yilmaz and Korkut 2010). The scientists, voters and leaders of the future will need to be able to understand and act on environmental matters (Carrier 2007). Therefore, the first years of learning are a fundamentally important period for moulding people’s behaviour towards the environment (Bryant and Hungerford 1977, Stapp 1978, Tilbury 1994). These years are co...

Education for sustainability categories of environmental, socio-cultural, political and economic factors were used to identify factors that interact to influence affective and cognitive domains, which affect environmentalist behavior. These influences in reality operated symbiotically but for purposes of analysis they have been portrayed sequentially. The portrayal of the autoethnographer's vocabulary of motives and identity theory applied to group commitment were used as analytic tools. The research methodology employed provides a strategy for investigating biography, which gives access to lived experience as a basis for understanding factors influencing environmentalism. Processes of metacognition and reflexivity, supported by critical engageme...

This research records the views and beliefs of the inhabitants of the city of Ioannina with regard to the lake. The majority of the citizens believe that Lake Pamvotida plays an important role in their lives since the mere presence of the lake contributes to improving their psychology. In addition, Lake Pamvotida contributes to the aesthetics of the city and helps with regard to opportunities for recreation and sport. In general, the citizens declare satisfied from the quality of their life. They also believe that if there are opportunities for them to stay in their homeland, they will do so. It seems that 50 percent of the citizens do not wish to participate in public matters. In addition, the percentage of citizens which do not participate in any environmental program is significant. However, it is encouraging that the percentage of those who would participate voluntarily in a ...

The citizens behaved as simple spectators of the disaster. Although they could have reacted, they did nothing. The citizens, however, declare that they know what actions they need to take in case of fire. Their information regarding forest fires mainly comes from television and radio, family and friends, newspapers and magazines and education. Indeed, it seems that through interpersonal channels of communication better results are achieved. In confronting forest fires, knowledge alone is not sufficient. In order to effectively confront forest fires, the local population also needs to be trained and organized in a voluntary system of confrontation.
