This is a case-control study designed to detect the ability of the 180° turn timed up and go (TUG) phase to detect a history of falls in the oldest-old. Sixty people aged 85 years and older were assessed in their homes. The single-task and dual-task TUG tests were performed using an inertial sensor (G-Walk). Sociodemographic data, physical activity levels, mental status, depressive symptoms, concern for falls occurrence, number of medicines in use, self-perception of balance, and the functional reach test were also assessed. The logistic regressions revealed the 180° turn phase of both the single-task and dual-task TUG was almost three times better than the full TUG test to detect a history of falls, thus providing insights that can be used to better assess functional mobility in the oldest-old.

Methods: Seventeen women with FM were included in this study. The VT1 was used as the standard method to compare four mathematical models applied in the literature to calculate the exercise intensity in FM patients: the well-known “220 − age” at 76%, Tanaka predictive equation “208 − 0.7 × age” at 76%, the FM model HRMax “209 – 0.85 × age” at 76%, and Karvonen Formula at 60%. Bland–Altman analysis and correlation analyses were used to explore agreement and correlation between the standard method and the mathematical models. Results: Significant correlations between the heart rate at the VT1 and the four mathematical estimation models were obser...

DESIGN: Literature review and abstracts of Annals since 2007 conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO and Scholar-Google databases through the following descriptors: physical exercise, physical education, life expectancy, years of a healthy life, among others. Books with scientific content were also consulted. Afterward, a critical analysis was performed on the studies found in descriptive text. CONCLUSION: Physical education has recognized relevance in aging, and new perspectives are established in the political and social empowerment in health promotion in the elderly. Physical activity programs need to widen opportunities and evidence of effectiveness/effectiveness results.

Methods: secondary analysis of results of the Brazilian 2013 National Health Survey. We analyzed the frequency of responses to the questions P34 (physical exercise or sport), P47 (knowledge of a public program of physical exercise or sport), P48 (participation in these programs), P49 (reason not to participate in these programs) and P36 (physical exercise or sport that practices more often) in two age groups: old-adult (60 to 79 years) and oldest old (80 or more). The chi-square statistical test was used to verify the distribution considering p<0.05. Results: The study had 9,679 young elderly and 1,498 oldest old. Most Brazilians older-adult 78,9% did not exercise with significant differences between old-adult (77,3%) and oldest old (89,3%). Furthermore, 81,6% did not know the existen...

However, this association is related with hypoglycemia episodes. Objective: The aim of this study was to perform a cross-sectional evaluation of the association between the physical activity (PA) level and hypoglycemia episodes reported in patients with T1D. Methods: Adult outpatients with T1D had their PA level assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (long form), considering the intensity of the physical activity (vigorous, moderate and/or walks) in daily activities, such as at work, means of transport, domestic activities and at leisure, and answered questions about self-care and hypoglycemia episodes. Results: The study included 126 patients who presented the following characteristics: mean age of 35 (28-47) years old and 16 (11-24) years of diabetes duration, 55% women, HbA1c=9.3 ± 2.1%, and body mass index = 25.0 ± 4.2 kg/m 2. Very active patients had lower values of glucose and LDL-cholesterol when compared with the less active group. A greater proportion of active (48.1%) and very active patients (66.7%) reported practicing exercise regularly when compared with the less active subjects (13.3%; P=0.003). Less active patients had a threefold chance of reporting hypoglycemia episodes when compared with very active patients (OR=3.49; CI 95%: 1.26-9.70; P=0.016). Conclusions: Less active adults with T1D presented more hypoglycemia, probably due to the practice of informal moderate and/or vigorous activities without specific self-care.

While cognitive aspects influence dual task (DT) performance, most DT-cost (DT-C) related metrics include only time- or speed- delta without weighting the accuracy of cognitive replies involved in the task. Objectives: The primary study goal was to weight the accuracy of cognitive replies as a contributing factor when estimating DT-C using a new index of DT-C that considers the accuracy of cognitive replies (P-index) in the instrumented timed up and go test (iTUG). Secondarily, to correlate the novel P-index with domains of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).Methods: Sixty-three participants (≥85 years old) took part in this study. The single task (ST) and DT iTUG tests were performed in a semi-random order. Both the time taken to complete the task measured utilizing an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and the accuracy of the cognitive replies wer...
