This paper describes the changing livelihoods of the residents of two villages that represent two different pathways to local economic development. One village relies primarily on agricultural intensification and diversification, although in combination with nonfarm activities. These nonfarm activities are either supplementary (such as handicraft production and seasonal migration) or related to farming, such as provision of agricultural services, transport and trade of agricultural produce. To a large extent, it is this nonfarm income that allows investment in agriculture at the household level. Residents of the second village, although nominally still owning rice farms, have effectively moved out ...

A survey was conducted of 949 registered nurses in a large tertiary general hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2018, using a self‐administered questionnaire including the Vietnamese UWES‐9, other scales measuring health status, work performance, job demand, job control, and workplace social support, and questions pertaining to demographic variables. Cronbach’s alpha and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated to assess reliability. Explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to assess factorial validity. Convergent validity was tested based on associations between the UWES‐9‐V and subscales and other scales.ResultsThe Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the UWES‐9‐V ...

Especially since the 1960’s, mega sport events have become a huge international draw card garnering a large amount of media attention, and attracting investment and also political interest. Tourism remains the world’s largest industry and continues to develop and grow. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between a mega sport event and the host destination. To address the aim, the research was conducted in two stages: the first stage was a literature review which presents a deeper understanding of the two-way relationship: (i) Mega sport events create opportunities for the host destination and (ii) The host destination attracts tourists to attend the mega sport event. The second stage explores two methods destinations can use to host a mega sport event successful.

We searched PubMed, the World Health Organization (WHO) website and the Cochrane database with no date or language restrictions. We contacted public health personnel, experts in the field and in ministries of health and did targeted web searches. A total of 33 documents were included in the analysis. One country, Viet Nam, incorporates oral cholera vaccination into its public health programme and has administered approximately 10.9 million vaccine doses between 1997 and 2012. In addition, over 3 million doses of the two WHO pre-qualified oral cholera vaccines have been administered in more than 16 campaigns around the world between 1997 and 2014. These campaigns have either been pre-emptive or reactive and have taken place under diverse conditions, such as in refugee camps or natural disasters. Estimated two-dose co...

Most of these deaths occur in Africa and southeast Asia. Increasing rates of drug resistance in pneumococcal strains emphasize the necessity of prevention of pneumococcal vaccines. The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of drug resistance and the distribution of serotype of pneumococcal strains isolated from pediatric patients with ALRI in Vietnam. Methods: Two hundred and twenty pediatric patients with ALRI under 5 years of age were enrolled in Hanoi, Vietnam between 2001 and 2002. Bacterial pathogens with a heavy growth (106 c.f.u./mL) were isolated from nasopharyngeal secretions on quantitative culture. Fifty‐three pneumococcal strains isolated from the nasopharynx of pediatric patients were examined for antibiotic susceptibility including drug‐resistant genes and serotyping. Results: A total of 73.6% of pneumococcal strai...

Rubella-specific immunoglobulin-M and immunoglobulin-G were investigated in cord blood samples by enzyme immunoassay. Corresponding clinical-epidemiological data were analyzed and the national congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) incidence was estimated using modeling. We enrolled 1988 pairs of mothers aged 17-45 years and their newborn babies. No mothers had received RCV. Multivariate analysis revealed that mothers aged 17-24 (aOR 2.5, 95% CI: 1.7-3.8) or 25-34 (1.4, 1.0-2.1) years were more likely to be susceptible than those aged 35-45 years. Overall 28.9% (574/1988, 95% CI: 26.9-30.9%) of mothers were seronegative. The CRI rate was 151 (95% CI: 0-322) per 100,000 live births. Modeling estimated that 3788 babies (95% CI: 3283-4143) were born with CRS annually in Vietnam with an overall CRS incidence of 234 (95% CI: 207-262) cases per 100,000 live births. A substantial proportion of women of childbearing age (WCBA) are at risk of rubella infection during pregnancy and this can result in a high frequency of miscarriage or burden of CRS across Vietnam. Prompt introduction of RCV into national immunization programme with catch-up vaccination to children and WCBA will reduce CRI in Vietnam.
