Patients in the control group did not receive any analgesic until they had a pain score of 5 or higher, patients in the group P3 received rectal paracetamol (20–25 mg·kg−1) at the third hour, and patients in the group P4 received the same dose of rectal paracetamol at the fourth hour after caudal epidural injection. Pain was assessed by VAS (Visual Analog Scale) and supplementary rescue analgesic need was recorded. Results: There was no difference between the demographic data or the duration and variety of surgery among the groups. A significantly lower number of patients required rescue analgesia at the sixth postoperative hour in group P3 and also lower pain scores were again obtained in group P3 at the sixth and eighth postoperative hours. Conclusions: Supplemental rectal paracetamol at the third hour of caudal blockade enhances the quality of postoperative analgesia better than its addition at the fourth hour in children undergoing inguinal surgery.

The synthesis, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and optical properties of tetrasubstituted CoII, C... more The synthesis, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and optical properties of tetrasubstituted CoII, CuII, and double-decker LuIII phthalocyanines are reported. The new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, and MALDI TOF mass spectrometry. Their electrochemistry was studied by cyclic voltammetry and Osteryoung square-wave voltammetry in nonaqueous medium. Nonlinear absorption and optical limiting performance of peripheral-substituted (C30H28N30)4Co (5), (C30H28N30)4Cu (6), and [(C30H28N30)4]2Lu (7) were investigated by the Z-scan technique. Whereas 6 and 7 showed good nonlinear absorption, 5 did not. Optical limiting parameters of the ratio of the excited state to the ground state absorption cross sections κ, the effective nonlinear absorption coefficient βeff, the linear absorption coefficient α0, limiting threshold Fth, and the saturation density or energy density Fsat values were determined for 6 and 7. The results indicated that both compounds exhibited good optical limiting performances. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2009)

Thermogravimetry and derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results led to information about the composition, dehydration, ligand denticity, thermal behaviour and thermal decomposition of the isolated compounds.

Compound 2 has been synthesized by heating compound 1 with metallic lithium in pentanol and hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid (10%) and then neutralized with ammonia solution. Compound 3 and 4 have been synthesized by heating 1 with ZnCl2 or CoCl2 in DMF in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), respectively. The new compounds were obtained in sufficient purity after successive washing with different solvents and were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV–vis, IR and mass spectra. We also studied aggregation behavior, electrochemical and electrical properties of these phthalocyanines. Direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) conductivity (40–100 kHz) measurements of films of 2, 3 and 4 were performed in the temperature range of 295–523 K. Impedance spectra (IS) of the 2, 3 and 4 were also studied. The conduction processes were discussed. Temperature dependence of dc conductivity of the films revealed that 2, 3 and 4 show a semiconductor behavior. Results of ac measurements showed that, conduction processes of the films of the complex consisted of different mechanisms depending on temperature and frequency.

Considerable interest has been shown in the synthesis and study of molecular complexes which may behave like semiconducting materials or at least show high conductivities. In this study, structural, electrical and thermal conductivity and optical properties of some inorganic complexes were investigated. From the XRD data, the unit cells of the samples were found as L–Cu is amorphous and L–Ni, L–Co are orthorhombic. L–Cu, L–Ni and L–Co have n-type of electrical conductivity. Electrical and optical band gaps of the complexes were found to be 1.46–1.36, 2.68–2.71 and 1.40–1.32 eV, respectively.

Molecular structure, atomic charges, dipole moments, total energies, and vibrational frequencies ... more Molecular structure, atomic charges, dipole moments, total energies, and vibrational frequencies of 4-(benzhydryloxy)phthalonitrile in the ground state have been calculated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and compared with the experimental data. Calculated frequencies are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. To determine conformational flexibility, the molecular energy profile of the title compound was obtained by semi-empirical (RAM1) calculations with respect to the selected torsion angle, which was varied from −180° to +180° in steps of 10°. In addition, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) analysis and thermodynamic properties of the title compound were investigated using theoretical calculations.

At the end of the experiment, Se levels were determined by using a fluorimetric method. Serum levels of vitamins A, E, C, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels of erythrocytes were spectrophotometrically determined. Our experimental results showed that vitamins A, E, C, and Se levels were found generally lower than the control groups, while serum MDA level and GSH-Px activity flexibly increased, which is dependent on injection days. The observed decreases in vitamins A, E, C, and Se levels in the blood might be causally related to the increased amount of free radicals that are generated with 2-furan-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole injection. However, further investigations are needed to clarify the significance of this observation in respect with the 2-furan-2-yl-1H-benzimidazole injection.
