Specifically, we believe AI/NLP can be helpful in several tasks, such as the extraction of implicit information needs enclosed in meeting minutes or other documents, analysis of explicit information needs expressed through Natural Language, processing and indexing of document collections, extraction of required information from documents, modeling of a common knowledge base, and, finally, identification of important concepts through the automatic extraction of terms. In particular, we envisioned this architecture in the specific and practical scenario of the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) of the European Space Agency (ESA), in the framework of the SHUMI project (Support To HUman Machine Interaction) developed in collaboration with the ESA/ESTEC - ACT (Advanced Concept Team).

The main issues encountered in applying the annotation criteria to a corpus of Italian language are discussed together with the choice of anchoring the semantic annotation layer to the underlying dependency syntactic structure. We describe the two experiments we carried to verify the reliability of the annotation methodology and to release the annotation scheme. Finally, we discuss the results of the linguistic analysis of the annotated data and report about ongoing work.

The resource integrates dictionary data coming from both users and legacy resources with an ontological backbone, which provides foundations for a formal characterization of lexical semantic structures (frames). A nucleus of basic Italian lemmas, which have been semantically analyzed and classified, is available for both online access and downloading. A restricted community of contributors is currently working on increasing the lexical coverage of the resource. Research is underway to extend the knowledge base model to encompass verbal frames.

A large scale semantic lexicon is studied within the framework of a NLP application. The coverage of the lexicon with respect the target domain and a (semi)automatic tuning approach have been evaluated. The impact of a corpus-driven inductive architecture aiming to compensate lacks in lexical information are thus measured and discussed.
