This work reports the results of analyses of three complete mycoplasma genomes, a pathogenic (744... more This work reports the results of analyses of three complete mycoplasma genomes, a pathogenic (7448) and a nonpathogenic (J) strain of the swine pathogen Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and a strain of the avian pathogen Mycoplasma synoviae; the genome sizes of the three strains were 920,079 bp, 897,405 bp, and 799,476 bp, respectively. These genomes were compared with other sequenced mycoplasma genomes reported in the literature to examine several aspects of mycoplasma evolution. Strain-specific regions, including integrative and conjugal elements, and genome rearrangements and alterations in adhesin sequences were observed in the M. hyopneumoniae strains, and all of these were potentially related to pathogenicity. The seroprevalence of antibodies for HIV, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirosis and rubella ... more The seroprevalence of antibodies for HIV, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirosis and rubella and its association with age and origin was investigated among pregnant women in Sergipe, northeastern Brazil. A total of 9,550 pregnant women (2,112 from the state capital and 7,438 from other municipalities) were enrolled in the study and consecutively tested during their first antenatal care visit in 2007. The following serum prevalences were found: syphilis (0.9%; 95% CI 0.7%-1.6%), HIV (0.14%; 95% CI 0.08%-0.2%), toxoplasmosis (IgG 69.3%; 95% CI 68.3%-70.2%; IgM 0.4%, 95% CI 0.3%-0.6%), cytomegalovirosis (IgG 76.6%, 95% CI 75.7%-77.5%; IgM 0.2%, 95% CI 0.09%-0.3%) and rubella (IgG 71.6%, 95% CI 70.7%-72.6%; IgM 0.1%, 95% CI 0.04%-0.2%). Toxoplasmosis seropositivity increased with age. The prevalences of IgG antibodies for toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus and rubella were higher in Aracaju (state capital) than in other municipalities in the State of Sergipe. The results showed that a large proportion of the pregnant women, particularly in municipalities other than the state capital, were susceptible to toxoplasmosis, rubella and cytomegalovirus, with a risk for their infants.

The relationship between parental involvement in childrens education and childrens academic per... more The relationship between parental involvement in childrens education and childrens academic performance is provided. A total of 110 (fourth grade children) participated in this study. The children completed the questionnaire " Quality of family interaction according to the children" and were evaluated by the using the School Performance Test (TDE). Results showed that the higher the frequency of mother-and father-child communication and the greater the parents involvement in the childrens school, cultural and leisure activities, the higher the childrens academic performance. Results suggest the importance of parental involvement on the childrens academic performance. In case of deficits is this area, the urgent need of programs aiming at improving the quality of the interactions between parents and their children, is enhanced.

The mini-ixora (Ixora coccinea 'Compacta') is a species highly appreciated for use in tropical ga... more The mini-ixora (Ixora coccinea 'Compacta') is a species highly appreciated for use in tropical gardens. Its propagation is made by cutting, however, its rooting percentage is very low so, the aim of this work was to evaluate substrates and environments for the mini-ixora rooting. Apical cuttings with 10 cm of length were used in two substrates: sand and Plantmax®. Three rooting environments were used: wet chamber, greenhouse and conventional rooting (shade cloth with 50% of shade). The experiment was carried out by using split plots with three different environments in the main plot and two substrates in the subplots. One also used five replications and ten cuttings per plot. Analyzing the results one hundred days after the experiment implantation one noticed that the sand had proportioned higher percentage of rooting (68%) compared to Plantmax (48%). The wet chamber also was the environment that provided better conditions for the propagation of the mini-ixora, with the highest percentage of rooting, 98%, compared to the greenhouse, 66% and to the conventional rooting, 10%. Moreover, sand and wet chamber also provided a better root quality. One concluded that the best substrate for mini-ixora propagation was sand and the cuttings should be placed in the wet chamber.

The community structure of Apoidea of a restricted area of primary dunes in São José de Ribamar, ... more The community structure of Apoidea of a restricted area of primary dunes in São José de Ribamar, Maranhão, Brazil was analyzed. Standardized samples were taken for one year, 2 times a month, from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the first day and from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. on the second by two collectors. A total of 3305 individuals of 31 species, belonging to four families (Apidae > Halictidae > Megachilidae > Andrenidae) were collected. Centris with 14 species and 890 individuals was the richest and most abundant genus. The abundance pattern and the richness were very similar to other sand dunes habitats in northeast Brazil. Of the total of bees sampled, 61% were represented by less than 36 individuals. The five most abundant species (more than 177 indivuduals) were: Apis mellifera Linnaeus, Centris (Centris) leprieuri Spinola, Eulaema nigrita Lepeletier, Eufriesea surinamensis Linnaeus and Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) cearensis Ducke. Bees were active throughout the year, with abundance peaks in the highest rainfall periods. Daily activity was greatest between 06:00 and 11:00 a.m., when relative humidity decreased and the temperature increased.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the frequency of binge eating disorder (BED) and of the main psychiatric d... more OBJECTIVES: To analyze the frequency of binge eating disorder (BED) and of the main psychiatric disorders associated with morbid obesity in individuals on the waiting list for bariatric surgery. METHOD: Cross sectional study. Interviews with patients from the Surgery for Obesity Program of Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital were conducted evaluating socio-demographic profile, quality of life (SF-36 scale), BED (Binge Eating Scale BES) and psychiatric disorders (M.I.N.I./DSM-IV). RESULTS: 67 out of 400 patients enrolled in the program were interviewed (16.8%). The BMI varied from 36.1 to 81.8 kg/m2 (average 48.5 ± 8.8). All have associated diseases, the most frequent being systemic arterial hypertension, sleeping disorders and osteopathies. The most frequent psychiatric disorders were: 47.8% generalized anxiety disorder, 29.9% major depressive disorder, single episode, 34.3% recurrent major depressive disorder. In this group 56.7% showed BED (25.4% moderate and 31.3% severe) and the worse scores in all the domains of quality of life (SF-36 scale). CONCLUSIONS: High prevalence of BED. The compulsive eaters showed a higher number of obesity treatments, higher prevalence of actual major depression, and the worse scores in all the domains of the SF-36 scale. Considering the ample range of psychopathology associated with BED and the greater probability of jeopardizing the surgery results it is very important to improve the detection of these disorders in order to provide adequate treatment.
