Additionally, the article critically analyzes mining company discourse that frames the displaced subject and the construction of the sense of community in order to disentangle the terms in which social difference is organized. The article concludes with some insights on the depoliticization of the resettlement process as part of the new forms of corporate governmentality and the gap between endogenous discourses about belonging and practices of identification of affected individuals.

Research paper thumbnail of Time Lattice: A Data Structure for the Interactive Visual Analysis of Large Time Series

Advances in technology coupled with the availability of low‐cost sensors have resulted in the con... more Advances in technology coupled with the availability of low‐cost sensors have resulted in the continuous generation of large time series from several sources. In order to visually explore and compare these time series at different scales, analysts need to execute online analytical processing (OLAP) queries that include constraints and group‐by's at multiple temporal hierarchies. Effective visual analysis requires these queries to be interactive. However, while existing OLAP cube‐based structures can support interactive query rates, the exponential memory requirement to materialize the data cube is often unsuitable for large data sets. Moreover, none of the recent space‐efficient cube data structures allow for updates. Thus, the cube must be re‐computed whenever there is new data, making them impractical in a streaming scenario. We propose Time Lattice, a memory‐efficient data structure that makes use of the implicit temporal hierarchy to enable interactive OLAP queries over large time series. Time Lattice is a subset of a fully materialized cube and is designed to handle fast updates and streaming data. We perform an experimental evaluation which shows that the space efficiency of the data structure does not hamper its performance when compared to the state of the art. In collaboration with signal processing and acoustics research scientists, we use the Time Lattice data structure to design the Noise Profiler, a web‐based visualization framework that supports the analysis of noise from cities. We demonstrate the utility of Noise Profiler through a set of case studies.

Effectively designing these systems is challenging and requires bringing together methods from different domains. In this paper, we discuss the challenges involved in designing a visual analytics system to interactively explore large spatio-temporal data sets and give an overview of our research that combines visualization and data management to tackle these challenges.

They can be both beneficial, such as for pedestrians during summer, and detrimental, by impacting vegetation and by blocking direct sunlight. Determining the effects of shadows requires the accumulation of shadows over time across different periods in a year. In this paper, we propose a simple yet efficient class of approach that uses the properties of sun movement to track the changing position of shadows within a fixed time interval. We use this approach to extend two commonly used shadowing techniques, shadow maps and ray tracing, and demonstrate the efficiency of our approach. Our technique is used to develop an interactive visual analysis system, Shadow Profiler, targeted at city planners and architects that allows them to test the impact of shadows for different development scenarios. With the ever-increasing amount of user-generated content found online, "what's trending" is now a commonplace phrase that tries to capture the zeitgeist of the world by ranking the most popular microblogging hashtags in a given region and time. However, before we can understand what these rankings tell us about the world, we need to be able to more easily create and explore them, given the significant scale of today's data. In this paper, we describe the computational challenges in building a real-time visual exploratory tool for finding top-ranked objects; build on the recent work involving in-memory and rank-aware data cubes to propose TOPKUBE: a data structure that answers top-k queries up to one order of magnitude faster than the previous state of the art; demonstrate...

Research paper thumbnail of Microstructural Evolution of Composite 8 WC-(Co, Ni): Effect of the Addition of SiC

Tungsten carbide (WC) based cemented carbides, also called hardmetals, are a family of composite ... more Tungsten carbide (WC) based cemented carbides, also called hardmetals, are a family of composite materials consisting of carbide ceramic particles embedded in a metallic binder. They are classified as metal matrix composites (MMCs) because the metallic binder is the matrix that holds the bulk material together [1]. WC based composites are used in applications where a good combination of hardness and toughness are necessary [2]. It is usual to add more components to tailor the microstructure of the WC-(Co, Ni) system. The hardness for the cemented carbides based on nickel, increases significantly because of the addition of reinforcements like SiC nanowhisker [3]. In this work, the SiC was considered as an additional component for the composite WC-8(Co, Ni). Four mixtures were prepared with SiC contents ranging from 0 to 3.0 wt%. These mixtures were pressed (200 MPa) and green samples with 25.2 mm of diameter and 40 g were produced. Sintering was carried out in Sinter-HIP furnace (20 ...

Comparing two popular tourist locations-Rockefeller Center in New York City (NYC) and Alcatraz Island in San Francisco (SF), using the pulse of these locations. The pulse, defined by a set of beats over multiple resolutions, captures the level of activity at a given location. In this example, the beats for the hourly and monthly resolutions are shown, based on Flickr activity. They are computed based on the topology of the time-varying scalar function that models the spatio-temporal distribution of the activity corresponding to a city. Dark green represents a significantly high activity at the location, while light green represents a relatively high activity compared to its neighboring locations. The similarity between the pulses of the two locations over the different resolution indicates that the level of activity is similar across time steps and resolutions even though one is located on the mainland, while the other is an island.

The advent of NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) technologies has resulted in an exponential increa... more The advent of NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) technologies has resulted in an exponential increase in the number of complete genomes available in biological databases. This advance has allowed the development of several computational tools enabling analyses of large amounts of data in each of the various steps, from processing and quality filtering to gap filling and manual curation. The tools developed for gap closure are very useful as they result in more complete genomes, which will influence downstream analyses of genomic plasticity and comparative genomics. However, the gap filling step remains a challenge for genome assembly, often requiring manual intervention. Here, we present GapBlaster, a graphical application to evaluate and close gaps. GapBlaster was developed via Java programming language. The software uses contigs obtained in the assembly of the genome to perform an alignment against a draft of the genome/scaffold, using BLAST or Mummer to close gaps. Then, all identified alignments of contigs that extend through the gaps in the draft sequence are presented to the user for further evaluation via the GapBlaster graphical interface. GapBlaster presents significant results compared to other similar software and has the advantage of offering a graphical interface for manual curation of the gaps. GapBlaster program, the user guide and the test datasets are freely available at https:// sourceforge.net/projects/gapblaster2015/. It requires Sun JDK 8 and Blast or Mummer.

The comparison is aimed at understanding the performance of low profile antennas backed by high impedance surfaces. In particular, an end loaded planar open sleeve dipole (ELPOSD) antenna is examined due to the various parameters within its configuration, offering significant design flexibility and a wide operating bandwidth. Measured data of the antennas demonstrate that increasing the number of unit cells improves the fractional bandwidth. The antenna bandwidth increased from 0.8% to 1.8% and from 0.8% to 2.7% for the JC and SP structures, respectively. The number of unit cells was increased from 48 to 80 for the JC-FSS and from 24 to 48 for the SP-FSS.
