Various attachment systems can be used for retaining mandibular overdentures such as bar, ball and socket, OT equator and locators. A new attachment system with metal to metal interface named Titach has evolved. During mastication, loads are transferred to alveolar bone surrounding the implants. OBJECTIVES: This study was done to compare the stress transmitted to peri-implant tissues of implant-assisted mandibular overdenture using two different attachment designs; Titach attachment and locator attachment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A completely edentulous epoxy resin mandibular model was used in which two parallel dental implants were inserted at the canine region bilaterally. Sixteen mandibular implant-assisted overdentures were constructed forming two groups; each with different attachment design. Group I received 8 pairs of Titach attachment, while group II received 8 pairs of locator attachment. The difference in stress distribution was measured using strain gauges and compared between the two studied groups. Vertical load and oblique load (30 o and 45 o) of 50 and 100 N using the universal testing machine were applied bilaterally on the central occlusal fossae of mandibular first molars. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between group I and II upon application of vertical loading 50, 100N and 30 o oblique loading 50 N. However, group I showed lower strain values upon application of 30 o oblique loading 100N, 45 o oblique loading 50N and 100N. CONCLUSIONS: Titach attachment with metal to metal interface showed less strain values with favourable stress distribution when compared to zest anchor locator attachment with nylon interface for implant-assisted mandibular overdenture.

Main methods: Carob leaf synthesized-MIONs were characterized using different techniques: Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), UV-vis spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The toxicity of MIONs in vivo was evaluated by: monitoring rat's body weight, measuring iron content in different brain areas, evaluating some oxidative stress parameters, estimating acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in addition to histopathological investigations. Key findings: The present study demonstrated no body weight changes of MIONs-treated rats. According to the conditions of the present study, the hippocampus and striatum were the most affected areas and demonstrated neuronal degeneration due to MIONs exposure. MIONs treatment of Wistar rats, also affected the iron homeostasis in both striatum and midbrain by decreasing iron content in these areas. The least affected areas were thalamus and cerebellum. The histopathological examination of brain areas demonstrated moderate neuronal degeneration in hippocampus and striatum, mild neuronal degeneration in cortex and slight degeneration in hypothalamus and pons-medulla areas were detected. Significance: The results suggested that MIONs have a toxic impact on different brain areas and the effect varies according to the brain area.

Patients and methods One hundred CTS diseased hands and 100 nondiseased hands were assessed clinically and by nerve conduction studies. We measured ultrasonographic crosssectional area (CSA) of the median nerve at various levels of the carpal canal (inlet and outlet), flattening ratio (FR), palmar bowing of the flexor retinaculum, wrist/ forearm ratio, as well as median nerve mobility and power doppler signals. Data from patients and controls were compared to determine the diagnostic relations and the grade of severity. Results Measures of CSA of the median nerve at the inlet and at the outlet, palmer bowing and inlet/forearm ratio in the CTS group were significantly higher than the control group (P<0.05); 50% of diseased hands showed restriction of mobility of the median nerve, while 31% had doppler signals. Positive correlations of ultrasonographic measurements with patient-oriented measures, clinical severity scale and electrophysiological grade were observed. Conclusion Ultrasonographic measurements of CSA at the inlet and flexor retinaculum have a relatively higher diagnostic accuracy than FR for CTS. The correlation between clinical scores, historical-objective-distribution scale, electrophysiological grade and ultrasonographic measurements reflects the usefulness of neuromuscular ultrasound in the diagnosis of idiopathic CTS.

The purpose is to assess the role of ADC value as a predictive for MS histologic changes with different enhancing pattern and its correlation with disease activity. Patients and methods: This prospective study included 28 chronic MS patients with 75 lesions, subjected for magnetic resonance imaging and ADC value measurement of the plaques and normally appearing white matter (NAWM) to be correlated with that of normal white matter (NWM) in 20 healthy controls. Results: T1-Hypointense and confluent lesions had statistical significant higher mean ADC value relative to the isointense and discrete lesions. Statistical significance difference was detected between mean ADC value of homogeneously enhancing lesions (HELs) and ring enhancing lesions (RELs) and between HELs and non-enhancing lesions (NELs), but no difference between NELs and RELs. Statistical significance difference was detected between ADC of NAWM relative to NWM of healthy controls. Conclusion: ADC value predicts histological changes in MS lesions. Pattern of enhancement doesn't correlate with neurologic deficits but ADC value is more valuable in assessing the disease activity.

Urine has the potential to contain a variety of molecular markers that may be associated with tumors. Methods: The study included 3 groups: group 1comprised 100 patients diagnosed with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Each of Group 2 included 100 patients with other pathology rather than NMIBC. Group3 comprised 100 healthy persons. Group1 was subdivided into patients with and without recurrence. The patients with recurrent tumors were subclassified into single or multiple recurrences. Urinary markers: TERTand miR-34a were evaluated. Results: Higher urinary TERT > 3.2 and lower urinary miR34a < 0.85 were detected significantly in NMIBC group compared to controls. Conclusion: Urinary molecular biomarkers are reliable non-invasive tools for NMIBC detection and prediction of recurrence. Urinary TERT >3.2 and miR34a< 0.85 were significantly higher in patients with NMIBC in comparison with controls. Urinary TERT > 3.2 had the highest overall diagnostic accuracy for bladder cancer detection.

Th... more Background: MS plaques display different pattern of enhancement with variable clinical course.
