Depression and somatization are emotional features present in chronic temporomandibular disorder ... more Depression and somatization are emotional features present in chronic temporomandibular disorder pain patients. This study aimed at evaluating results after acupuncture on psychological aspects of females with chronic muscle temporomandibular disorder pain. METHODS: Sample was made up of 40 females, aged between 18 and 45 years, submitted to two procedures: acupuncture and splint. Patients were evaluated for one month by the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders questionnaire Axis II before and after treatment. Treatment expectation before treatment was also evaluated by a visual analog scale with verbal anchors: negative expectation and positive expectation. RESULTS: There has been chronic pain improvement in 53.3% of acupuncture patients and in 60% of splint patients. For severe depression, 11.1% of acupuncture and 50% of splint patients have improved. Patients with severe somatization had 16.7% improvement with acupuncture and 44.4% with splint. There has been negative correlation (p<0.05) between treatment expectation and somatization (including and excluding pain items) for the acupuncture group. CONCLUSION: Both groups have improved some psychological aspects (depression and somatization) after a short period of treatment.

Little is known, however, about its behavior in subjects with different dental and skeletal standards, which would contribute to the development of orthodontic and orthognathic treatments. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the electromyographic activity of the buccinator muscle, in subjects Class III Angle, during mastication. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The sample was composed by 32 healthy subjects, without Temporomandibular Disfunction, during mastication, being 16 Class I and 16 Class III. In order to guarantee the reliability of the caption of the signal, differential electrode were used, as well as function tests, correlation and normalization of data. Therefore, a biopsychosocial model has been proposed to characterize the multifactorial nature of temporomandibular disorder. The aim of the present study was investigate the correlation of salivary cortisol levels with the activities of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles of patients with different degrees of temporomandibular disorder. [Subjects and Methods] Forty-nine women between 18 and 40 years of age with a diagnosis of myogenous temporomandibular disorder based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for temporomandibular disorders were evaluated using the Fonseca Index to determine the degree of the disorder. Salivary cortisol levels were determined and surface electromyography was used to evaluate electrical activity in the masticatory muscles. [Results] Positive correlations were found among the degree of temporomandibular disorder, electromyographic activity and salivary cortisol: as women with more severe temporomandibular disorder had greater electrical activity in the muscles analyzed, especially the anterior temporal muscle, and higher levels of cortisol. [Conclusion] Muscle activity was greater among individuals with severe temporomandibular disorder and positive correlations were found among electromyographic activity, salivary cortisol and the degree of temporomandibular disorder severity.

In children, such condition is more concerned because it causes alteration during their development, which may generate deformities. O conhecimento da atividade eletromiográfica produzida durante a realização de exercícios para o ... more O conhecimento da atividade eletromiográfica produzida durante a realização de exercícios para o ombro pode auxiliar na determinação de sua aplicabilidade clínica. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a influência da direção da carga e condição da extremidade na atividade elétrica de músculos da cintura escapular e membro superior durante a realização de exercícios com a extremidade distal fixa e carga externa axial (EFCA) e extremidade livre com carga externa rotacional (ELCR). Foram selecionadas 20 voluntárias (23,2 anos ± 0,9) sedentárias. Foram avaliados os mm. tríceps do braço, bíceps do braço, peitoral maior, trapézio e deltóide. Foi realizado o registro eletromiográfico de superfície, durante a realização de dois exercícios com EFCA e dois com ELCR, utilizando 100% da resistência máxima previamente estabelecida. Os valores de RMS normalizados pela contração voluntária máxima foram comparados por meio de um modelo de efeitos mistos com nível de significância de 5%. Nessas condições experimentais, os resultados do presente estudo mostraram que exercícios semelhantes, classificados pela condição da extremidade e a direção da carga aplicada ao membro superior, promovem níveis semelhantes de atividade eletromiográfica em apenas parte dos músculos estudados. Esses achados questionam a capacidade do sistema de classificação utilizado neste estudo de predizer o tipo de resposta muscular esperada na realização de diferentes tarefas de mesma classificação.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are characterized by several signs and symptoms, such as pain a... more Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are characterized by several signs and symptoms, such as pain and changes in the electrical activity of masticatory muscles. Considering that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a resource indicated to promote analgesia, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of TENS on pain and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the jaw elevator muscles in TMD patients. This study evaluated 35 female volunteers: 19 TMD patients (mean age = 23.04 ± 3.5) and 16 normal subjects (mean age = 23.3 ± 3.0). Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (conventional mode, 150 Hz) was applied once to each group for 45 minutes. Surface electromyography (gain of 100 times and 1 kHz sampling frequency) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) were applied before and immediately after TENS application. Both VAS data and root mean square (RMS) values were analyzed using Student's t-test. The TMD group, compared to the control group, showed higher EMG activity of the jaw elevator muscles at rest. No difference was observed between the groups regarding maximum voluntary clenching (MVC). In TMD patients, TENS reduced both pain and EMG activity of the anterior portion of the temporal muscle, increasing the activity of the masseter muscles during MVC. It is possible to conclude that a single TENS application is effective in pain reduction. However, it does not act homogeneously on the features of the electric activity of the muscles evaluated.

Objetivo: avaliar através da eletromiogra a de superfície o comportamento dos músculos esternocle... more Objetivo: avaliar através da eletromiogra a de superfície o comportamento dos músculos esternocleidomastóideo e paraespinhais cervicais bilateralmente em pacientes que se comunicam por meio da fala esofágica e laringe arti cial, para determinar se o tipo de voz utilizada altera o comportamento dos músculos cervicais. Métodos: foram avaliados dez voluntários (duas mulheres e oito homens), idade média de 49,7 anos, com laringectomia total, tempo de pós-operatório médio de 2,6 anos, com limitação dos movimentos do pescoço, divididos em dois grupos: grupo 1: cinco voluntários (laringe arti cial); grupo 2: cinco voluntários (voz esofágica); grupo 3 controle (sete voluntários). Resultados: na fonação não houve alteração no padrão de ativação muscular dos indivíduos que utilizam a voz esofágica e a laringe arti cial, com relação ao grupo controle. No entanto, na condição de repouso houve diferença signi cativa, comparando-se os valores médios de Root Mean Square dos grupos 1 e 2 com o grupo 3, para o músculo esternocleidomastóideo direito e para os músculos paraespinhais cervicais direito. Conclusão: o tipo de opção vocal não interferiu no padrão de ativação muscular durante a fonação, bem como não existiu diferença no padrão de ativação muscular na fonação dos voluntários quando comparados a indivíduos sem intercorrências no aparelho fonador. cie mostrou ser um método favorável na avaliação terapêutica dos pacientes, porém são necessários novos estudos para se ter o per l mais completo destes aspectos.

ABSTRACT AIM: this paper evaluated the relation between the orthodontic correction of the posteri... more ABSTRACT AIM: this paper evaluated the relation between the orthodontic correction of the posterior crossbite and the activity pattern of the Masseter and Temporal muscles. METHODS: the authors carried out orthodontic and electomyographic studies on twenty children (11 girls and 9 boys) ranging between 7 and 9 years of age. All individuals presented posterior crossbite which was corrected using removable orthodontic appliance. The bilateral electromyographic analysis of muscles Masseter and Temporal was conducted in two muscle conditions and in four different periods. Conditions: a) at rest; b) random mastications. Periods: a) before the establishment of removable appliance; b) 30 days after the establishment of appliance; c) right after correction of crossbite; d) 30 days after appliance was removed. RESULTS: the analysis of data showed that there was slight decrease of Masseter muscle activity at rest, increasing gradually until the end of period d in study. During random mastication condition the data showed increased activity. The activity in Temporal muscles decreased 30 days after the establishment of orthodontic appliance and remained low until the period in study. CONCLUSION: the data suggests that Masseter and Temporal muscles increased their activities due to orthodontic treatment.

The sample consisted of 40 women with TMD and unbalanced energy predominance of Yang Liver Ascension, selected using the Renying and Cunkou pulses, randomly divided into two groups: acupuncture and splint. The effect of treatments on the masseter and anterior temporal muscles was evaluated after 4 weeks of treatment, by means of electromyographic activity (root mean square) and pain pressure threshold. Pain intensity was measured using the visual analog scale, and range of mouth opening was evaluated using a millimeter ruler. All evaluations were performed at the beginning and end of the treatment. Visual analog scale score was reduced equally in the two groups (p &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0001), and the increase in range of mouth opening was significant in both groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular d... more The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in university students from 19 to 25 years old, male and female, through the distribution of frequency of the data obtained from a questionnaire and physical examination. The results showed that 68% of the subjects exhibited some degree of TMD, and the women were the most affected. Signs and symptoms such as articular sounds, pain to palpation of the masticatory, cervical and scapular girdle musculature, subjective sensation of emotional stress, and postural and occlusal changes were more evident in the group with TMD, although they were also present in subjects classified as TMD-free. Limitations in the mandibular movements were not found. The association of the obtained data allowed identifying a high prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD in the Brazilian university population.

Electroacupunture (EA) includes the passage of an electrical current through the acupuncture need... more Electroacupunture (EA) includes the passage of an electrical current through the acupuncture needle and is commonly used for pain relief. To evaluate the EA treatment effects for myofascial pain in the upper trapezius muscle. Twenty women aged ranging from 18 to 40 years (mean=24.95; SD=5.88 years), with a body mass index ranging from 19 to 25 kg/m2 (mean=22.33; SD=0.56 kg/m2), with regular menstrual cycles controlled by oral contraceptive, local or referred pain for more than six months and at least one myofascial trigger point in the upper trapezius participated in this study. The participants received a total of nine EA sessions over five weeks. The needles were inserted at the accupoints GB20, GB21, LV3, LI4, and at &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;ashi&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; points. A mixed current of 2 Hz and 100 Hz was applied alternatively every 5 seconds for 30 minutes. The outcomes were pain intensity measured by the visual analogue scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT) measured by an algometer, electromyography (EMG) and quality of life measured by the SF-36 questionnaire. Inter-occurrences between sessions were monitored. Paired t-test, Wilcoxon test, and repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) having Tukey-Kramer as post-hoc tests were used. O conhecimento da atividade eletromiográfica produzida durante a realização de exercícios para o ... more O conhecimento da atividade eletromiográfica produzida durante a realização de exercícios para o ombro pode auxiliar na determinação de sua aplicabilidade clínica. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a influência da direção da carga e condição da extremidade na atividade elétrica de músculos da cintura escapular e membro superior durante a realização de exercícios com a extremidade distal fixa e carga externa axial (EFCA) e extremidade livre com carga externa rotacional (ELCR). Foram selecionadas 20 voluntárias (23,2 anos ± 0,9) sedentárias. Foram avaliados os mm. tríceps do braço, bíceps do braço, peitoral maior, trapézio e deltóide. Foi realizado o registro eletromiográfico de superfície, durante a realização de dois exercícios com EFCA e dois com ELCR, utilizando 100% da resistência máxima previamente estabelecida. Os valores de RMS normalizados pela contração voluntária máxima foram comparados por meio de um modelo de efeitos mistos com nível de significância de 5%. Nessas condições experimentais, os resultados do presente estudo mostraram que exercícios semelhantes, classificados pela condição da extremidade e a direção da carga aplicada ao membro superior, promovem níveis semelhantes de atividade eletromiográfica em apenas parte dos músculos estudados. Esses achados questionam a capacidade do sistema de classificação utilizado neste estudo de predizer o tipo de resposta muscular esperada na realização de diferentes tarefas de mesma classificação.

Considering that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a resource indicated to promote analgesia, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of TENS on pain and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the jaw elevator muscles in TMD patients. This study evaluated 35 female volunteers: 19 TMD patients (mean age = 23.04 ± 3.5) and 16 normal subjects (mean age = 23.3 ± 3.0). Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (conventional mode, 150 Hz) was applied once to each group for 45 minutes. Surface electromyography (gain of 100 times and 1 kHz sampling frequency) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) were applied before and immediately after TENS application. Both VAS data and root mean square (RMS) values were analyzed using Student's t-test. The TMD group, compared to the control group, showed higher EMG activity of the jaw elevator muscles at rest. No difference was observed between the groups regarding maximum voluntary clenching (MVC). In TMD patients, TENS reduced both pain and EMG activity of the anterior portion of the temporal muscle, increasing the activity of the masseter muscles during MVC. It is possible to conclude that a single TENS application is effective in pain reduction. However, it does not act homogeneously on the features of the electric activity of the muscles evaluated.

Objetivo: avaliar através da eletromiogra a de superfície o comportamento dos músculos esternocle... more Objetivo: avaliar através da eletromiogra a de superfície o comportamento dos músculos esternocleidomastóideo e paraespinhais cervicais bilateralmente em pacientes que se comunicam por meio da fala esofágica e laringe arti cial, para determinar se o tipo de voz utilizada altera o comportamento dos músculos cervicais. Métodos: foram avaliados dez voluntários (duas mulheres e oito homens), idade média de 49,7 anos, com laringectomia total, tempo de pós-operatório médio de 2,6 anos, com limitação dos movimentos do pescoço, divididos em dois grupos: grupo 1: cinco voluntários (laringe arti cial); grupo 2: cinco voluntários (voz esofágica); grupo 3 controle (sete voluntários). Resultados: na fonação não houve alteração no padrão de ativação muscular dos indivíduos que utilizam a voz esofágica e a laringe arti cial, com relação ao grupo controle. No entanto, na condição de repouso houve diferença signi cativa, comparando-se os valores médios de Root Mean Square dos grupos 1 e 2 com o grupo 3, para o músculo esternocleidomastóideo direito e para os músculos paraespinhais cervicais direito. Conclusão: o tipo de opção vocal não interferiu no padrão de ativação muscular durante a fonação, bem como não existiu diferença no padrão de ativação muscular na fonação dos voluntários quando comparados a indivíduos sem intercorrências no aparelho fonador. cie mostrou ser um método favorável na avaliação terapêutica dos pacientes, porém são necessários novos estudos para se ter o per l mais completo destes aspectos.

ABSTRACT AIM: this paper evaluated the relation between the orthodontic correction of the posteri... more ABSTRACT AIM: this paper evaluated the relation between the orthodontic correction of the posterior crossbite and the activity pattern of the Masseter and Temporal muscles. METHODS: the authors carried out orthodontic and electomyographic studies on twenty children (11 girls and 9 boys) ranging between 7 and 9 years of age. All individuals presented posterior crossbite which was corrected using removable orthodontic appliance. The bilateral electromyographic analysis of muscles Masseter and Temporal was conducted in two muscle conditions and in four different periods. Conditions: a) at rest; b) random mastications. Periods: a) before the establishment of removable appliance; b) 30 days after the establishment of appliance; c) right after correction of crossbite; d) 30 days after appliance was removed. RESULTS: the analysis of data showed that there was slight decrease of Masseter muscle activity at rest, increasing gradually until the end of period d in study. During random mastication condition the data showed increased activity. The activity in Temporal muscles decreased 30 days after the establishment of orthodontic appliance and remained low until the period in study. CONCLUSION: the data suggests that Masseter and Temporal muscles increased their activities due to orthodontic treatment.

The sample consisted of 40 women with TMD and unbalanced energy predominance of Yang Liver Ascension, selected using the Renying and Cunkou pulses, randomly divided into two groups: acupuncture and splint. The effect of treatments on the masseter and anterior temporal muscles was evaluated after 4 weeks of treatment, by means of electromyographic activity (root mean square) and pain pressure threshold. Pain intensity was measured using the visual analog scale, and range of mouth opening was evaluated using a millimeter ruler. All evaluations were performed at the beginning and end of the treatment. Visual analog scale score was reduced equally in the two groups (p &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0001), and the increase in range of mouth opening was significant in both groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular d... more The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in university students from 19 to 25 years old, male and female, through the distribution of frequency of the data obtained from a questionnaire and physical examination. The results showed that 68% of the subjects exhibited some degree of TMD, and the women were the most affected. Signs and symptoms such as articular sounds, pain to palpation of the masticatory, cervical and scapular girdle musculature, subjective sensation of emotional stress, and postural and occlusal changes were more evident in the group with TMD, although they were also present in subjects classified as TMD-free. Limitations in the mandibular movements were not found. The association of the obtained data allowed identifying a high prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD in the Brazilian university population.

Electroacupunture (EA) includes the passage of an electrical current through the acupuncture need... more Electroacupunture (EA) includes the passage of an electrical current through the acupuncture needle and is commonly used for pain relief. To evaluate the EA treatment effects for myofascial pain in the upper trapezius muscle. Twenty women aged ranging from 18 to 40 years (mean=24.95; SD=5.88 years), with a body mass index ranging from 19 to 25 kg/m2 (mean=22.33; SD=0.56 kg/m2), with regular menstrual cycles controlled by oral contraceptive, local or referred pain for more than six months and at least one myofascial trigger point in the upper trapezius participated in this study. The participants received a total of nine EA sessions over five weeks. The needles were inserted at the accupoints GB20, GB21, LV3, LI4, and at &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot;ashi&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;quot; points. A mixed current of 2 Hz and 100 Hz was applied alternatively every 5 seconds for 30 minutes. The outcomes were pain intensity measured by the visual analogue scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT) measured by an algometer, electromyography (EMG) and quality of life measured by the SF-36 questionnaire. Inter-occurrences between sessions were monitored. Paired t-test, Wilcoxon test, and repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) having Tukey-Kramer as post-hoc tests were used.
