Research paper thumbnail of Exchange rates 'overshooting': an empirical study of Bangladesh and India

Even in the absence of any major news, exchange rates adjust through the day as foreign exchange dealers manage their inventories and respond to trades with others who may be better informed. The role of exchange rate changes in eliminating international trade imbalances suggests that we should expect countries with current trade surpluses to have an appreciating currency, whereas countries with trade deficits should have depreciating currencies. Such exchange rate changes would lead to changes in international relative prices that would work to eliminate the trade imbalance. This paper analyses the movement of the exchange rates of Bangladesh and India over the period 1973-98. From the log-linear model of exchange rate finds that Consumer Price Index for both the country is the main variable causing the exchange rate fluctuations during this period. Exports, Imports, In...

Three strains such as E. coli O157:H7 NCTC reference strain and two other environmentally isolated strains have been used in this study. New Zealand rabbits were immunized with surface proteins of NCTC reference strain and immunoblot analysis was performed against the surface proteins of all three strains. Immunoblot analysis revealed that a 94 kDa surface protein of E. coli O157:H7 could be the possible candidate for the protective activity experiment. Group of mice receiving the 94 kDa surface protein through both intraperitoneal and intranasal routes survived the challenge experiment. Whereas, all the control mice died within a couple of days. Mice challenge experiment clearly demonstrated the strong potential of the 94 kDa protein in the immunized mice. The data of this study provide...

Research paper thumbnail of PpORS, an ancient type III polyketide synthase, is required for integrity of leaf cuticle and resistance to dehydration in the moss, Physcomitrella patens

Type III polyketide synthases (PKSs) have co-evolved with terrestrial plants such that each taxon can generate a characteristic collection of polyketides, fine-tuned to its needs. 2'-Oxoalkylresorcinol synthase from Physcomitrella patens (PpORS) is basal to all plant type III PKSs in phylogenetic trees and may closely resemble their most recent common ancestor. To gain insight into the roles that ancestral plant type III PKSs might have played during early land plant evolution, we constructed and phenotypically characterized targeted knockouts of PpORS. Ors gametophores, unless submerged in water while they were developing, displayed various leaf malformations that included grossly misshapen leaves, missing or abnormal midribs, multicellular protuberances and localized nec...

This paper presents three-dimensional (3-D) vertical solenoid inductors by electro deposition technique. Metal ground shield inserted in the oxide layer to terminate electric field to enter inside substrate. Compared to on-chip spiral inductors, capacitive energy loss can be reduced about 60% and power loss about 90% in our proposed method.

Game theory is the discipline of science that studies strategy. Epistemic game theory explores how individuals reason about others choices for decision making. This theory can play a vital role for optimizing the use of distributed resources since our systems are continuously providing support for decision making where the outcome of a decision is dependent on other systems. We use a model driven approach to build a bridge between software models and epistemic game theory. In this initial work, we have shown how software models such as entity models may be used for building epistemic models. We propose an algorithm for constructing epistemic models where conflict situations are represented with the use of diagrammatic constraints. We use examples from the healthcare domain to explain the proposed technique.

The magnitude of the flow of remittances and its growth rate in Bangladesh are becoming gradually... more The magnitude of the flow of remittances and its growth rate in Bangladesh are becoming gradually more significant. This huge flow of remittances can affect the production sector, employment structure and finally, the scale of external trade competitiveness of the economy through the Real Exchange Rate (RER). Therefore, the movement of RER from its equilibrium position is very important and at the same time, it is also crucial to identify the influencing factors of this process. Using Johansen cointegration and Vector Error Correction model, this study has found that this massive flow of remittances is considerably appreciating its RER and in fact, deteriorating the external trade competitiveness of Bangladesh. Thus, this procedure is slowly destroying the economy of Bangladesh through Dutch Disease. Therefore, gradual relaxation of the trade barrier including promoting external trade diversification along with diverting the remittances flow from non-tradable sector to priority inve...

The serially diluted non-O1 non-O139 V. cholerae LPS showed haemagglutination of rabbit erythrocytes up to a dilution of 1 : 512, which is probably due to the hydrophilic polysaccharide moiety of the LPS. To test whether the LPS was able to bind to glycoproteins and other simple sugars, the LPS was incubated with mucin, glucose and sucrose and was assayed for the residual haemagglutinating activity. It was found that the mucin could inactivate the LPS, which indicated that the LPS of the non-O1 non-O139 V. cholerae strains may bind to glycoprotein and its mechanism of adherence may be similar to that of other bacterial LPS. However, the glucose and sucrose could not inhibit the LPS as has been demonstrated by the positive residual haemagglutinating activity of the LPS.
