Most studies of human papilloma virus (HPV) are aimed at the natural history of the infection and... more Most studies of human papilloma virus (HPV) are aimed at the natural history of the infection and its relation to cancer; however, there are few studies to assess knowledge of the general population. Our aim was analyze the degree of knowledge of Argentinians about HPV infection and its prevention. We conducted a voluntary, anonymous and non-binding survey with 27 multiple-choice items, in twelve private and public establishments, selected to include a broad population in terms of education, age and gender. The survey consisted of three sections: individual characteristics of the volunteer, HPV infection basic knowledge, its prevention and the virus relationship with other cancers. One thousand two hundred ninety seven volunteers aged 18 to 80 participated. The total number of correct answers was 45.1%. The correct answers for relationship HPV and cervical cancer was 62.1%. Although there is a vast knowledge on HPV infections in women as well as on their association with cervical cancer, the study of HPV infections in males is scarce and controversial. The aim of the present work was to detect and typify HPV infections of the anogenital region in males and analyze the associated risk factors in the population studied. Anogenital samples from 37 patients (30 of whom were HIV carriers) attending the Infectology Service at the Hospital Nacional de Clínicas in Córdoba, Argentina, were studied. Nine of these patients tested HPV-positive and five out of these nine were found to have mixed infections, being 18 and 61 the most frequent genotypes. There was a significant correlation between the HPV-positive patients and those having an HPV-compatible lesion or AIDS. Hu man papillo mavirus (HPV) is considered a necessary factor for the development of cervical can... more Hu man papillo mavirus (HPV) is considered a necessary factor for the development of cervical cancer; however, its relat ionship with oral cancer is controversial. The aim of this study was detect the presence of HPV in lesions of the oral cavity and its correlation with other risk factors. Presence of HPV was studied by polymerase chain reaction in samples fro m benign lesions, potentially malignant lesions (PML), neoplasias and healthy mucosae. The results from the different groups were co mpared; in addition to their histopathological variab les with tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, so on. HPV was detected in 88.89% of benign lesions, 41.38% of PM L and 56.25% of neoplasias. The most prevalent genotypes were 16 and 6. Together, reached 55% of the total number of cases. The first phylogenetic analysis was based on a LCR region fragment. Nowadays, 4 variants are known: African (Af-1, Af-2), Asian-American (AA) and European (E). However the existence of sub-lineages of the European variant havs been proposed, specific mutations in the E6 and LCR sequences being possibly related to persistent viral infections. The aim of this study was a phylogenetic study of HPV16 sequences of endocervical samples from Cordoba, in order to detect the circulating lineages and analyze the presence of mutations that could be correlated with malignant disease. The phylogenetic analysis determined that 86% of the samples belonged to the E variant, 7% to AF-1 and the remaining 7% to AF-2. Las bacterias que pertenecen a la familia Chlamydiaceae causan un extenso espectro de enfermedades en una amplia gama de huéspedes, incluidos los seres humanos, otros mamíferos y aves. Sin embargo, se sabe muy poco acerca de las infecciones por clamidias en aves de nuestra región. Esta investigación examinó 28 aves clínicamente normales mantenidas en cautiverio ilegal, que fueron confiscadas en Córdoba, Argentina. El objetivo fue detectar Chlamydophila spp. en hisopados cloacales por análisis del gen ompA. La PCR anidada del gen ompA reveló la presencia de Chlamydophila pecorum en cinco muestras. El análisis de secuencias demostró la presencia del gen ompA de C. pecorum en estas aves. Por el contrario, Chlamydophila psittaci no se detectó. Estas aves pueden ser reservorios asintomáticos o portadores subclínicos de C. pecorum. Este es el primer informe de la detección de C. pecorum en la Argentina.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can induce a wide spectrum of squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) o... more Human papillomavirus (HPV) can induce a wide spectrum of squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) of varying severity. The aim of the present study was to establish the frequency of HPV infection and identify the genotypes circulating in women from Córdoba, Argentina, in relation to age and cytology. A total of 186 women, between 18 and 65 years old, with antecedents of SIL, underwent a pelvic examination and had cervical cells collected for cytology and HPV DNA detection. Ninety-six samples (51.6%) were positive for HPV detection, and sixty-three (65.6%) of them showed the presence of at least one HR-HPV. Low-and high-grade SIL showed significant association in patients younger than 35 years of age. We found 18 different genotypes, with a greater presence of HR-HPV. Genotypes 16 and 6 were the most frequent. Seven (7.3%) multiple infections, 85.7% of which had at least one HR-HPV, were detected. The detection of a large number of different HPV genotypes is a warning sign. It is thus necessary to strengthen the monitoring of the circulation of high-risk genotypes, currently less prevalent in intraepithelial lesions, as a control measure for the possible impact of the implementation of vaccines against genotypes 16 and 18.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C.tr) infections are the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted inf... more Chlamydia trachomatis (C.tr) infections are the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted infections worldwide. They are often asymptomatic and therefore underdiagnosed as there is no routine screening surveillance. This case supports the possibility of sexual abuse as a route of transmission of C.tr. It is well known that nearly one third of sexually assaulted children are at risk for infection by a sexually transmitted agent. This is why in cases of sexual abuse, it is standardized that C.tr positive results by Nucleic Acid Amplification Techniques (NAATs) should be confirmed looking for another C.tr target; for this reason, we used a Polimerase Chain Reaction (PCR) directed to cryptic plasmid of C.tr. Confirmation was specified by the use of another PCR with a different genetic target (ompA) and sequencing. We concluded that our patient's oral lesions were probably originated by her father's sexual abuse.

However, very little is known about chlamydial infections in birds in our region. In the present study, we examined 28 clinically normal birds In illegal captivity that were confiscated in the province of Córdoba, Argentina. The objective was to detect Chlamydophila spp. in cloacal swabs by genetic analysis of the ompA gene. Nested-PCR of the ompA gene identified five samples as Chlamydophila pecorum and the sequence analysis demonstrated the presence of the ompA gene of C. pecorum In these birds. On the other hand, Chlamydophila psittaci was not detected. These birds could be either asymptomatic reservoirs or subclinical carriers of C. pecorum. This is the first report of the detection of C. pecorum in Argentina.
