The article draws on research exploring children's engagement with issues of global justice. The research was conducted with seven to nine year olds in three school settings in the Dublin area. The research explored children's responses to photographs set in different global contexts and to the concepts of money, fairness, decision making and the environment. The findings highlight a tendency amongst the participant children to characterise poverty as extreme deprivation, to marry their understandings of poverty and of developing countries so that one is synonymous with the other and to perceive the relationship between Ireland and developing countries principally in charitable terms. The findings further indicate that, for some children, there was an expectation that people living in developing countries should show gratitude where they have basic facilit...

Research paper thumbnail of “We can’t really know cos we weren’t really there”: Identifying Irish primary children’s bottleneck beliefs about history

Historical Encounters: A journal of historical consciousness, historical cultures, and history education

Due to the lack of research with younger age groups, much of the explanatory power of the prevailing frameworks in epistemic research has been extrapolated from research conducted with older populations. To address this concern, this paper reports on a series of semi-structured interviews designed to identify primary children’s beliefs about the nature of history and historical knowledge. Thematic analysis of the data provided a rich and textured insight into their understanding of the nature of history and historical knowledge and it was found that these beliefs appear to have their origins in both the children’s experiences of history and their common sense (or domain-general) ideas of how the world works. This analysis also highlighted a number of “epistemic bottlenecks” (beliefs about th...

There is famous history and there is family history and maybe myth and legends are history like the Children of Lir or Setanta. There are lots of different types of history. Even wars are history. There are even stories about love and sorrow in history like Deirdre of the Sorrows. A lot of things have happened in history.

Irish Educational Studies, 2007

Research into student teachers' perceptions, attitudes and prior experiences of learning suggests... more Research into student teachers' perceptions, attitudes and prior experiences of learning suggests that these experiences can exert an influence on practice which can be relatively undisturbed by their initial teacher education. This article is based on the initial findings of an all-Ireland survey of all first-year students on B.Ed. courses in colleges in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland. The survey is the first stage in a longitudinal study which will follow the same cohort of students for the duration of their initial teacher education, seeking to map and track the development of their ideas about teaching and learning in primary history, geography and science. Based on an analysis of the quantitative data in the entry questionnaire, the initial findings suggest that subject knowledge remains a problematic issue in initial teacher education and that both location and gender interact with knowledge, attitudes and subject area to produce a complex and challenging context for teacher educators in history, geography and science education.
