To this end, this paper assesses how perceived university support for entrepreneurship influences entrepreneurial characteristics and intentions in students enrolled at Amazonas and São Paulo State Universities. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach based on multivariate data analysis using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling was applied to a sample of 420 respondents. Findings Results indicate that the university environment positively influences entrepreneurial behavior and intention in students. Nonetheless, further integration between academia and external dimensions of the ecosystems is necessary to drive more intense entrepreneurial activity in students. The educational contexts of Amazonas and São Paulo present significant differences in the relationship between entrepreneurial characteristics and en...

This policy measure has empowered organizations (i.e., universities, SMEs, and non-profit organizations) to be the owners of inventions made by federally-funded research, as well as it has ensured royalties, licensing, and spinningoff to the organizations that have made these inventions. The most consistent output of this policy measure has been the flourishment of the academic entrepreneurship phenomenon around the world (Grimaldi et al. 2011; Aldridge and Audretsch 2017; Guerrero et al. 2015; Guerrero and Urbano 2019b). This has been confirmed by the exponential rising of technology transfer and academic entrepreneurship research over the past three decades (Miranda et al. 2018; Guerrero and Urbano 2019b).

One of the main points of attention in this debate concerns the pivotal role of universities within entrepreneurial ecosystems. Drawing from this background, this research investigates the locational dynamics of academic spin-offs in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil, as well as its association with the respective alma maters of entrepreneurs. 1082 entrepreneurial projects were analyzed covering the period 1998-2017. While research-intensive public universities play a leading role in the generation and retention of entrepreneurs at the local level, the distance from developed markets reduces the concentration of spin-offs in the region. This finding carries implications for the notion that university campuses can leverage levels of regional development, since the causal relationships in this process seem to be tied to elements that are endogenous but also exogenous to the university.

Design/methodology/approach The empirical setting involves small and medium-sized enterprises located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Primary data for 223 knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship (KIE) firms was obtained through questionnaires applied to ventures which applied to the innovative research in small business program, a small business innovation research-like initiative run by the São Paulo Research Foundation. Econometric results assessed the drivers of competitiveness in terms of firm growth, research and development intensification and technology transfer. Findings Results highlight the complexity involved in establishing effective knowledge management processes in terms of driving KIE performance. Notwithstanding, some interesting insights on the moderation effects of...

As not only developed nations but also emerging economies and regions embedded in this countrylevel unit of analysis show an economic structure strongly based in the tertiary sector, it is mandatory for policymaking processes to better evaluate and understand the idiosyncrasies of these innovation-generating services and its relationships with National, Sectoral and Regional Innovation Systems. Thus, this article aims at approaching the dynamics of Foreign Direct Investment (Inward and Outward flows) in KIS in Spain considering the Regional (NUTS 2) level of analysis and taking into account their interactions with the innovative environment of two specific regions (Madrid and Andalusia) by testing a regressive model built upon technological and innovation systems’ va...

In this article we look at a prior step of the entrepreneurial event, i.e., how universities' dynamics and initiatives related to entrepreneurship affect the proclivity of faculty to engage in entrepreneurship support. We propose and validate a conceptual model that directly relates the university ecosystem with faculty engagement, having entrepreneurial experience of faculty as a moderator and analyzing differences between public and private institutions. Data comprises information from 680 faculty members of over 70 higher education institutions from all regions of Brazil. Analyses were performed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equations Modeling. Results point to a strong positive relation between developed university ecosystems and the engagement of faculty with entrepreneurial activities, especially for individuals with stronger entrepreneurial experience. No differences were found between private and public institutions. From a practical standpoint, it is possible to identify more effective, innovative, and systematic ways to implement intrapreneurial practices in universities.

It is now recognized that academic contributions to the socioeconomic environment go well beyond scientific investigation and teaching activities, and incorporate market-oriented initiatives to the academic mission. However, these effects are geographically bounded. Given these conditions, this article aims at addressing universities' impacts upon output vectors of localized innovation ecosystems. Using data from cities and microregions in the state of São Paulo, Brazil observed throughout the period of 2002-2014, we address universities' effects upon the locallevel generation of patents and utility models, software production and emergence of knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship. Besides the scant available evidence on innovation ecosystems located outside developed economies, dealing with a developing country also means we are addressing an analytical unit in which universities play a critical role in terms of knowledge production and

This has hindered a deeper comprehension of the economic mechanisms that shape evolutionary trends in entrepreneurial activity and how they operate in distinct places. We propose that EE have regularities, but they can also assume different configurations, i.e., varying combinations of influential dimensions. Through fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis, we address this issue with data from the State of São Paulo, Brazil. This research focuses on five EE dimensions: Science & Technology, Human Capital, Market Dynamics, Business Dynamics, and Infrastructure. Findings point at the heterogeneous nature of EE distributed in three different paths. While configurations’ vary in terms of causal conditions, research universities, knowledge-intensive jobs and wider credit operations are core-causal conditions.
