The paper discusses the origin and spread of a typical stylistic feature in Scythian art: the mer... more The paper discusses the origin and spread of a typical stylistic feature in Scythian art: the merging and re-combining of different animals and animal parts. The oldest traces of this feature can be tracked back to the seventh century BC and probably originated from contacts with Scythians and the Greek poleis around the Black Sea coast and the Near East. In the course of time, Greek influences become ever stronger in Scythian art. With the fantastic horse-gears from the Pazyryk tombs in the Altai mountains, this stylistic principle transcends single objects and becomes manifest in actual living animals.
