For both, the search for community was a life-long quest and the ideal of community was the single, underlying thesis of their thoughts and ministries. The significance of this study lies in its examination of each man's respective approaches to the explication and application of the ideal of community. It is the claim of this study that a comparative analysis of this concern in Thurman and King can yield fruitful insight into the conception, character, and actualization of human community.

Although Howard Thurman is the lesser known of the two, his life and ministry influenced many individuals (including King) who have impacted American society and the larger world community. Both thinkers were also black Americans whose earliest experiences of oppression based on the coalescence of color and race in the segregated South had a profound impact on their quests and interpretations of human community. Bevans' translation and praxis models of contextual theology to develop perspectives on social changes. Its theory of ethical leadership is informed by drawing contrasts among different social change theories and practices, including those of Martin Luther King, Jr., Paulo Freire, Camilo Torres, and Nelson Mandela. This book wrestles with the problem of social and political evil that manifests itself in vicious cycles of conflict and oppression. In Rwanda, such cycles started in the 16th century, when rivalry emerged among the Tutsi clans that had become numerous in the eastern part of Rwanda. Some Tutsi pushed westward, aggressively invaded Hutu principalities, and used weapons to conquer and dominate them. Today, in the aftermath of murderous genocides, this book contends that it is urgent and necessary to break the cycle of violence that has alternated since then between Tutsis and Hutus in order to ...

He told a wonderful story that went something like this:Once upon a time long ago in a land far away, there lived a brave captain and a courageous crew of women and men who were in search of a new land. Standing on the shores of that land far away and in that time long ago, this brave captain said to his courageous crew,The new land which we seek is far beyond the horizon, as our fathers and mothers spoke of it. It is the land which was promised to us, a land of freedom and harmony among peoples of the earth; and in order to reach this land we must cross an ocean and a sea. The journey, he said, will be long and difficult and many who start with us will not make it to the shores of the new land. The waters that we must sail are treacherous, storms rage there, the winds are mighty and c...

Through an introspective journey of understanding ourselves through facing “the other,” Fluker challenges readers to think about the dynamic relationship among spirituality, ethics, and leadership. Discussions of spirituality cover a broad and increasingly complex spectrum of beliefs, practices and approaches within and beyond traditional religious circles. For our purposes, spirituality refers to a way or ways of seeking or being in relationship with the other who is believed to be worthy of reverence and highest devotion. In this definition, I am concerned with the other as inclusive of both individuality and community. The other is not impersonal, but intimate...
