In this paper the excellent results of this non-standard practice are analysed and related to the characteristics of the EAF-slag resulting from this recycling. An interesting effect has been found on the characteristics of foaming velocity, slag basicity and slag density. Slag foaming studies were conducted in the laboratories of UNSW (Sydney, Australia) using the high temperature visualization facility. The studies have established the differences in the slag foaming phenomenon between the electric arc furnace slag formed with usual components (lime, dololime, etc.) and the slag formed with the non-standard mix (lime and recycled ladle slag). Using a model of isothermal solubility, developed by Politecnico di Milano University (Italy), the other EAF slag properties, in particular th...

The technology was used to optimize the use of chemical energy within the electric arc furnace (EAF). The project was a success providing TAMSA a 4.4% reduction in conversion costs (oxygen, methane, electricity and carbon) and a reduction of 1 minute in power-on-time. Subsequently, in late 2003, Techint installed and commissioned their KT-Chemical package at TAMSA. The Goodfellow EFSOP™ system was again used to optimize chemical energy usage within the EAF. The Goodfellow Expert Furnace System Optimization Process (Goodfellow EFSOP™) is a proprietary process that uses continuous off-gas analysis, along with process monitoring to optimize the use of chemical energy within the electric arc furnace (EAF). Optimization is achieved by adjustments to the electric furnace process (carbon charge practice, injected carbon, methane and oxygen), ac...

These slags can lose their compact structure and assume a powdered form as a result of interactions between the solidified slag constituents and the atmosphere humidity. The powders of the slag can increase the concentration of particulates in the atmosphere near the steelmaking plant and this implies the adoption of complex and expensive procedures for storage. A new technique to manage this problem has been designed by the Techint Meltshop Division that consists in the recycling of the ladle slag within the electric arc furnace (EAF) through the injection system. The dilution of the chemical species contained in the slag and their combination with the species featuring the EAF slag afford a double advantage: the final slag is structured by chemical species that do not lead to the formation of the powders and better stabilize the foaming slag. The results obtained through the observations developed on the industrial trials have been discussed through the measurements performed by the identification of the chemical species and the result of the thermodynamic modelling.
