During the development of the modern city, urban waste was a coveted source of resources that fed industrial and agricultural activities, which, in turn, fed cities with diverse material goods and food. Garbage is a recent invention that breaks this circulation of organic and inorganic materials, starting with the institution of undifferentiated collection—which mixes all waste—destined for landfills, incinerators, or open dumps. Starting from the experience of collecting recyclable materials created by Brazilian waste pickers, which today finds reflection in urban agroecology, this article discusses how these activities contribute to creating a new man–nature metabolism, broken by capitalist production processes, as well as its limits and the conditions necessary for its development.

These anomalies have been associated with raising tensions that resulted from globalization and the increase of inter-capitalist dispute. In this context emerges the phenomenon of financialization of the economy that leads organizations to want short-term results. Work management forms assume aggressive and even violent nature that stimulates competition between workers and teams by imposing ever-growing goals and loads. This context presents challenges to interventions that aim to change management models in order to make the work more humane and sustainable. The chapter addresses the following questions: What are the central contradictions in today’s productive processes? How can one create a need among managers and other players for more sustained transformation of production models? What kind of demands do these changes require for inte...

Production and consumption represent critical environmental impacts on soil degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity reduction. The generation of waste is also significant. In addition to these territorial impacts, food can create several fundamental functionalities such as work, health, services and social relationships. This article presents an analysis, based on the Functional and Cooperative Economy (FCE) approach, of two initiatives that cooperate for food well-being in Rio de Janeiro, the first related to food production and distribution, and the second to collection and treatment of organic waste. The objective is to characterize the challenges and limits of these initiatives’ current economic model and build guidelines for transforming their economic models. Such local anchorage is supposed to be integrated in ergonomic research to improve work conditions and design sustainable work systems. Based on studies led in France and in Brazil, this communication analyzed the effects of the territorial dimensions over the work of the sorters, that raise work systems sustainability challenges for waste sorting facilities in both countries.

The goal of this article is to understand the cognitive processes of the construction engineer that allow them to anticipate problems in several Levels of Anticipation of the construction process, planning, and decision making in production and safety. To achieve this goal we use, interacting with the ethnographic study, the methodology of activity analysis and, in particular, what is called approach of the course of action. Thus, the cases presented make it possible to understand how the construction engineer, using information available in the Levels of Anticipation of the construction process, manipulates resources—personal (tacit and explicit knowledge, skills, etc.), material (designs), and social (relationship with his team)—when he perceives problems.

The aim is to conceptually consider work activity within sustainable development, and to contribute methodologically towards developing strategies for designing sustainable work systems. After a brief description of the factors and the dimensions that have contributed to the creation of ideas on sustainable development, we will put forward two main approaches for understanding work activity within the context of sustainability, these being: the durability of work activity and the development of work activities for sustainable development. Both approaches are presented and examples are given. This is followed by a discussion of the design of sustainable work systems that focuses particularly on the political and technical dimensions of project management.

Sustainable development calls for an integrated approach of three dimensions: social equity, economic viability and environmental sustainability. In order to achieve this integration, considerable innovations efforts are required. However, the work, understood as a productive act, is deeply lacking in the current researches. Starting from the idea that work is a "fundamental need" the goal of this project is to propose innovative methods that can be used for designing production systems from the perspective of sustainable development.

Safety Science, 2014

In spite of the dissemination of prevention programs and the proposals for developing safety design for the construction industry, construction sites remain dangerous and unhealthy places. Recently, safety has been proposed to be considered from the development phase of the design (Construction Hazards Prevention through Design), but with little effectiveness in practice. In addition to these more recent proposals, we will demonstrate that the integration between safety and production can proceed through anticipations occurring at several levels of the construction phase, not only in the design phase. Through narratives emerged through techniques of activity analysis at the construction site, it was possible to highlight and categorize 25 cases with implications for the production process development. The results show that this integration between production and safety is possible through anticipations occurring at several levels of the construction phase, from the design analysis conducted by the construction engineer to the implementation. This will allow the development of design situations for implementing safe work situations. The contribution and originality of this paper are based upon the presentation of a model in three levels of anticipation of problems during the construction phase and its effects on improving production and safety.

These guidelines aim at considering the work of future users, from the beginning of the project, anticipating working condition problems. In this case study, the ergonomics guidelines are based on a two-year ergonomics research divided into two main stages: [1] visits to the petroleum platforms; and [2] validation of the guidelines by the design engineers. By analyzing operating platforms we suggest the construction of what we call settings of usage. These are schemes of usage that preserve the essential relations of current situations and are able to advise the designers’ activities. These settings are not general guidelines, nor detailed specifications. They are minimal specifications capable of influencing final solutions. These guidelines aim at helping design engineers from the very beginning of the project. This paper will present settings of usage and guidelines for pig systems, valves, stairways, t...

It also discusses the application of ISO 11064 standard used throughout this intervention. The results show that the specifications suggested by the ergonomics team proposed a new concept for the control centre for the company's offshore production units and that, in the face of the complexity of the project, the standard was essential regarding several vital methodological principles including: the need to conduct situational analyses and work simulations, the participation of users, among others. It can be concluded that, although the standard focuses primarily on the design of non-mobile control centres, some of its principles are applicable to mobile systems such as oil drilling platforms. The standard can also function as an important instrument of social mediation in the relations between the companies involved in the project.
