There is neither absolute certainty, nor "the solution" when dealing with violent and sex offenders. A society has many options for lowering the risks and for protecting its citizens. The focus on aspects of prevention in handling offenders plays a central role. Unfortunately, many countries show sizable deficits in areas of prevention:

Studies conducted in Switzerland have shown that every one inmate in four is violent at least once during incarceration. These violent acts differ in regard to manifestation and a specific characterization of violence according to type, target, implication and trigger appears to be necessary. Existing criminal prognostic instruments are not suitable for estimating the risk of violent behavior in prisons. Therefore, the development of specific models is essential. International studies have identified various risk factors. However, due to the aforementioned differences in facilities, these predictors can only partly be transferred to a Swiss setting.

In this context, the episodic character of the majority of adolescent delinquency is usually pointed out; however, numerous studies show high re-offending rates for released adolescents. The goal of this study is to examine the legal probation of juvenile delinquents after release from penal reformative training. In this study, the legal probation of adolescents committed to the AEA Uitikon, in the Canton of Zurich, between 1974 and 1986 was scrutinized by examining extracts from their criminal record as of 2003. The period of catamnesis was thus between 17 and 29 years. Overall, 71% of offenders reoffended, 29% with a violent or sexual offence. Bivariate logistic regression showed that the kind of offence committed had no influence on the probability of recidivism. If commitment to the AEA was due to a single offence (as opposed to serial offences), the risk of recidivism was reduced...

To achieve this objective, the Consortium to Establish a Register for Alzheimer's Disease-Neuropsychological Battery (CERAD-NP) data of patients diagnosed with these two conditions were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Methods In the first regression analysis, the following CERAD-NP subtests were included: verbal fluency, Boston naming test, word list learning, constructional praxis, word list recall, and constructional praxis recall. In a second regression analysis, only CERAD-NP memory parameters were included: word list learning, word list recall, word list intrusions, word list savings, word list recognition, word list false positive errors, constructional praxis recall, and constructional praxis savings. Results The combination of word list recall and constructional praxis recall best distinguished between LOD and AD, with a ROC of 0.91. In the stepwise regression of memory measures, word list recall, word list savings, and constructional praxis recall was the best combination, resulting in a ROC of 0.92. Conclusion The most efficacious combination of the CERAD-NP battery for discriminating between LOD and AD consisted of word list recall and constructional praxis recall. Of the CERAD-NP memory measures, word list recall, word list savings, and constructional praxis recall represented the best diagnostic combination.
