In line with the Sustainable Development Goal 3:3 of ending the epidemic of hepatitis by year 203... more In line with the Sustainable Development Goal 3:3 of ending the epidemic of hepatitis by year 2030, there is a global call for strategic information to understand viral hepatitis. Existing studies on hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Nigeria have primarily focused on health practitioners and their patients, to the neglect of detailed empirical data on health communication practice, especially as it relates to semi-urban and urban demographic information. The study set to find out the communication strategies employed by government and non-government organisations working on HBV, as well as the preferred health communication channels for hepatitis B by semi-urban and urban residents. The study adopted a mixed method. The qualitative method assessed the communication strategies employed by government and non-government health-related agencies in informing people on HBV in Nigeria while, the survey examined the preferred health communication channels for HBV management among 582 semi-urban and urban residents in Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun States, Southwest Nigeria. Bivariate analyses were performed on demographic variables and preferred health communication channels for HBV by states. This study found that government agencies and non-government organisations working on hepatitis B predominantly make use of interpersonal communication in getting the people informed of HBV. This study explores the how women utilize the social media for social engagement and empowerment.... more This study explores the how women utilize the social media for social engagement and empowerment. Also, this study is anchored on the uses and gratification theory, which stipulates how women use the social media and the gratification they seek and derive from the media. The method adopted was survey and the instrument was a questionnaire. Five research questions were raised and answered in the study. This study found out that the social media empower and encourage women in diverse ways, one of which is that the social media encourage women to engage in economic activities that build networks with colleagues, business partners, workers and clients. This study concludes that women make use of the social media as a veritable source of empowerment in different spheres of life.

This study evaluated the extent to which married Idoma (Benue State) and Igala people (Kogi State... more This study evaluated the extent to which married Idoma (Benue State) and Igala people (Kogi State) in North-Central Nigeria were exposed to the 2017 National Family Planning Communication Campaigns. The study also examined their level of knowledge, the extent to which they adopted the campaign messages, and how Alekwu/Ibegwu and other socio-cultural factors influenced their level of adoption of the campaign messages. The study adopted a quantitative (questionnaire survey) research method. The data were subjected to a descriptive analysis, correlation, ANOVA, Pearson Product Movement Correlation (PPMC), and Binary Logistics Regression. The findings showed that the majority of the people were exposed to information on condoms, implants, and Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCDs) (Cuppar T) in the course of the campaign; however, most of them were not exposed to information on Oral Pills, Vasectomies, Tubal ligation and Injections. It also provides insight in to people’s state of mind, their ideologies and beliefs on issues which they make comments about. Usage of words, manner of expression and language pattern are indicative of people’s motives and beliefs on national conversations. This study examines the readers’ comments on Nigerian online news reports with the aim of understanding readers’ attitudes on political issues during 2015 presidential elections. Since the readers’ comments are anonymous most times and because many people do not use their true identity, they provide insight into the true state of people’s mind, beliefs and attitudes and the implications of these on the corporate existence of Nigeria as a nation. Religious crises is a very controversial issue that has been in the history of Nigeria for years.... more Religious crises is a very controversial issue that has been in the history of Nigeria for years. The study reviews the depth coverage of religious crises and their effects on the security of citizens. Prominence, slant, frequency and the media representation were analysed using content analysis. Relevant literatures on religion, media and crises were also reviewed. Specific theories were stated to make emphasis on the role of the media. This study employed the aid of a coding sheet in gathering data, the content of two major daily newspapers, The Guardian and The Punch were reviewed and they served as the sampling size. Most of the research questions were aimed at examining the attention these newspapers give to new stories, features and cartoons that address religious crises by investigating the prominence, slant and frequency of news reports. This is without prejudice to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) that is more deadly than the other three put together, and had affected some countries in West Africa- Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. There is little awareness and education via the mass media on some common viral infections in Nigeria like Hepatitis compared to HIV. Therefore, there is dire need for information, sensitisation and education on the viruses, means of transmission, preventive measures and also therapy.
