The patency of the anastomoses was confirmed radiologically and by the injection of a dye, as well as histologically in paraffin-embedded and Goldner-stained serial sections. The overall patency amounted to 58% in animals investigated 4--6 weeks postoperatively (i.e. 17 out of 30 anastomoses). Stenosis of the junction was observed in all patent anastomoses investigated. The results of vaso-vasostomy employing a biological tissue adhesive were markedly superior to those with cyanoacylate.

We used three different variant exon sequence-specific murine monoclonal antibodies to epitopes encoded by exon v5, exon v6, or exon v7-v8 of human variant CD44 to study the expression of CD44 splice variants by immunohistochemistry in human cervical cancer. One-hundred five patients with surgically treated squamous cell carcinomas of the cervix stages IB to IIB were included in the study. CD44 splice variants CD44v5, CD44v6, and CD44v7-8 were detected in 70, 67, and 26%, respectively. Tumors expressing exon v6 had significantly more often metastasized to the pelvic nodes (58 vs 79%, P = 0.04). Expression of exon v6 was significantly correlated with a greater probability of vascular space invasion (73 vs 50%, P = 0.04) and a significantly lower rate of inflammatory stromal reaction (48 vs 78%, P = 0.004). Patients suffering from tumors expressing splice variant CD44v6 showed poorer overall survival (P = 0.03). In cases with negative pelvic lymph nodes we found a poorer prognosis when tumors expressed CD44v6 (P = 0.01) or CD44v7-8 (P = 0.02). Among the investigated CD44 splice variants expression of exon v6 is the most promising prognostic marker in surgically treated cervical cancer.

At the time of clinical admission, symptoms such as postcoital bleeding or metrorrhagia were found in these women as often as in those who had never undergone gynaecological investigation. But in the latter group of patients, stages II and III of the tumour were seen in a twofold higher rate of incidence. After reviewing the PAP smears it is considered that a faulty smear technique was the main reason for failure of prophylaxis. Screening errors committed by the cytologist were less frequent.

The placenta was left undisturbed. TWin B was confirmed to be alive within an intact second sac. Directly after delivery of twin A tocolysis was begun and cervical cerclage was undertaken. Pregnancy was successfully prolonged, which enabled the second fetus to remain in utero and grow for another 12 weeks. Onset of active labor resulted in delivery of a healthy 1750 gm female infant at the beginning of 33 weeks' gestation. The neonatal care was benign and the infant left the hospi:,al in excellent condition after 4 weeks. The case is presented in detail and discussed with respect to the ag!lressive approach undertaken to prolong gestation.

It has been proposed that the presence of elevated levels of this protein may be an independent prognostic factor and may be important for the ability of a tumor to metastasize. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of immunohistochemically detectable mutant p53-protein on metastasis-free survival of patients with breast cancer. Immunohistochemistry was performed on 117 paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of consecutive patients with stage T1-T4 breast cancer, using a monoclonal antibody against p53 suppressor gene product. 29 (24.8%) specimens showed positive staining, whereas in 88 (75.2%) a negative staining reaction for p53 was found. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of MCP-1 in the natural history of ovarian cancer and to determine its value as differentiation marker and prognostic marker regarding disease free and overall survival. This retrospective study comprises 86 patients with ovarian cancer, 48 with primary ovarian cancer and 38 with recurrent ovarian cancer, 67 patients with benign ovarian cysts and 42 healthy women. Median serum levels in patients with primary ovarian cancer, recurrent ovarian cancer, benign ovarian cysts and in healthy women were 535.6 (range 129.6-1200) pg ml-1 , 427.3 (range 193.4-1101) pg ml-1 , 371.2 (range 222-986.8) pg ml-1 and 318.7 (range 241.3-681.4) pg ml-1 respectively (Mann-Whitney U-test, P < 0.001). Univariate logistic regression models revealed a significant influence of MCP-1 serum levels on the odds of presenting with primary ovarian cancer versus benign cysts and versus healthy women respectively (univariate logistic regression, P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 respectively). In a multivariate logistic regression model considering MCP-1 and CA 125 serum levels simultaneously, both MCP-1 and CA 125 revealed statistical significance on the odds of presenting with primary ovarian cancer versus benign cysts (multivariate logistic regression, P = 0.05 and P < 0.001 respectively). In ovarian cancer patients, MCP-1 serum levels showed a statistically significant correlation with histological grade (Mann-Whitney U-test, P = 0.02) and age at the time of diagnosis (Mann-Whitney U-test, P = 0.03). Elevated MCP-1 serum levels prior to therapy were not associated with disease-free and overall survival (log-rank test, P = 0.2 and P = 0.7 respectively). In summary these data indicate that MCP-1 might play a functional role in the natural history of ovarian cancer and might serve as differentiation marker between benign ovarian cysts and ovarian cancer, providing additional information to the established tumour marker CA 125.

Histologic slides were immunostained for CD34-antigen. MVD was determined within each tumor by enumeration under a light microscope at 200£ magni®cation and an examination area of 0.25 mm 2. The Cox proportional-hazards model was used for multivariate analysis. In 63 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer the 5-year survival rate (OS-%) was as follows: 55.0% (^12.5) in 18 patients whose tumors had an MVD , 10/®eld, and 23.6% (^6.7) in 45 patients whose tumors had an MVD10/®eld (log-rank P 0:038. MVD showed a signi®cant in¯uence on survival in univariate analysis, but failed to attain a signi®cant value after adjustment for established prognostic parameters such as patients' age at diagnosis, stage of disease, and histologic grading. High MVD was signi®cantly associated with advanced patients' age at diagnosis. This and a considerable heterogenity in the vascular architecture of ovarian carcinoma tissue might be the reasons why MVD did not reveal prognostic signi®cance in multivariate analysis. In contrast to a variety of solid neoplasms, MVD does not seem to be a useful predictor of survival in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer.

We report our own measurements of 61 spectroscopic cluster redshifts, and 48 velocity dispersions each calculated with more than 15 member galaxies. This catalog also includes 19 dispersions of SPT-observed clusters previously reported in the literature. The majority of the clusters in this paper are SPT-discovered; of these, most have been previously reported in other SPT cluster catalogs, and five are reported here as SPT discoveries for the first time. By performing a resampling analysis of galaxy velocities, we find that unbiased velocity dispersions can be obtained from a relatively small number of member galaxies (30), but with increased systematic scatter. We use this analysis to determine statistical confidence intervals that include the effect of membership selection. We fit scaling relations between the observed cluster velocity dispersions and mass estimates from SZ and X-ray observables. In both cases, the results are consistent with the scaling relation between velocity dispersion and mass expected from dark-matter simulations. We measure a ∼30% log-normal scatter in dispersion at fixed mass, and a ∼10% offset in the normalization of the dispersion-mass relation when compared to the expectation from simulations, which is within the expected level of systematic uncertainty.

Fifty-six (39.4%) of these women used oral contraceptives (OC) for at least two years before examination. We used DNA in situ hybridization on all biopsies for detection of human papillomavirus (HPV)-DNA. Among OC users a significant trend towards higher HPV infection rates in high grade CIN (odds ratio 2.9, P less than 0.05) was found, whereas non-users of oral contraceptives had the highest HPV infection rate in condylomatous lesions without CIN (odds ratio 0.5, P less than 0.05). Thus in OC users HPV infection was about 24 times more likely in CIN III as in condyloma, while among non-users the trend was the other way round (7-fold likelihood of HPV positivity in condyloma compared to CIN III). Other known risk factors for cervical carcinoma did not influence HPV infection rates in either group.
