This paper attempts to provide a critical appraisal of the debate on the effectiveness of microfi... more This paper attempts to provide a critical appraisal of the debate on the effectiveness of microfinance as a universal poverty reduction tool. It argues that while microfinance has developed some innovative management and business strategies, its impact on poverty reduction remains in doubt. Microfinance, however, certainly plays an important role in providing safety-net and consumption smoothening. The borrowers of microfinance possibly also benefit from learning-by-doing and from self-esteem. However, for any significant dent on poverty, the focus of public policy should be on growth-oriented and equity-enhancing programs, such as broad-based productive employment creation.

The universities just like any other public institutions in Kenya are buyers of goods, services a... more The universities just like any other public institutions in Kenya are buyers of goods, services and works. Hence public procurement plays a critical role in the Kenyan economy and an important factor in economic growth. Sound and efficient use of scarce public resources is the responsibility of the government and every public entity. Despite the efforts made by the PPOA to strengthen the public procurement system in Kenya, a number of government funded construction projects in the public sector exceed the contract sum, time schedule or general gross inefficiency. The objective of this study is; to analyse the influence of procurement procedures on construction project implementation in public universities. Descriptive survey design was used in the study using questionnaires and an observation checklist as instruments which were validated by piloting in private universities. The sample size was purposive targeting a population of twenty university employees seconded to construction projects. The primary data was collected by administration of questionnaires. Collected data was factor analysed by use of percentages, frequencies among others. Ordinal regression analysis was employed for quantitative data. The findings indicated that 80% of respondents agreed that procurement procedures greatly influenced implementation of construction projects in the Kenyan public universities, hence recommended that procedures should be strictly adhered to, for quality end products. Areas for further research; Analysis of value addition of strategic approaches in procurement activities on the implementation of construction projects in public universities, Determination of the influence of contextual factors on the relationship between procurement function activities and project implementation of construction projects in public universities. In conclusion findings of this study may assist the construction industry to embrace the procurement procedures for satisfactory end results that will satisfy the project sponsor, users and stakeholders.

Shoppers will prefer to visit a supermarket and get all the products they want under one roof. Besides, there is no bargaining or haggling in a supermarket. This has seen the growth of supermarkets in Kakamega to four, namely; Tuskys, Nakumatt, Yako and Wallias. This was conducted in supermarkets in Kakamega town using descriptive research. Questionnaires, interviews schedules and observation were used as instruments of data collection. Location strongly influences buying behaviour in Kakamega. The current location of supermarkets is not likely to change soon but they are supposed to put in place strategies that would counter distance issue. This was evidenced when the supermarkets near the bus stage and a bank received large numbers of customers irrespective of their high prices they charge. The objective of the study was to evaluate remuneration scheme in relation to staff turnover in Kenyan Private Universities and to ultimately come up with appropriate recommendations that would facilitate the reduction of staff turnover in private universities. It is hoped university administration, government and other human resource policy makers and employees will greatly benefit from the findings. The descriptive research design was used to obtain data from the targeted and accessible population which comprised of teaching and non-teaching staff at the Nairobi and Nakuru Methodist University campuses. 136 respondents were selected purposively. Self-developed questionnaires were administered personally to respondents to gather the information. The data collected was analyzed using tables, frequency distributions and percentages. The statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was used to assist in the analysis process. Remuneration is key in retaining workers in any organization and it must be the purpose of any human resource management to design a competitive remuneration package which will serve to attract, retain, and motivate staff so as to ensure the ultimate organization's commercial and financial viability.
