The concept of disability has evolved significantly, transitioning from a biomedical to a social and human rights model, influencing policies and practices globally. Despite the paradigm shift, children with disabilities in the United Kingdom continue to face pervasive barriers, including poverty, exclusion from education, inadequate healthcare, and limited access to housing. This study critically explores these challenges and assesses the effectiveness of legal and institutional frameworks in addressing them.

Employing desk review, case law analysis, and doctrinal methods, the research examines the intersection of childhood disability and socio-economic deprivation. It evaluates the role of international and domestic legal instruments and the responsibilities of local authorities in safeguarding the rights of disabled children. The study highlights how legislative reforms and statutory measures in the UK have aligned with global human rights standards while also identifying limitations in their implementation.

Through an analysis of case law, academic debates, and statistical data, the research underscores the impact of austerity measures, including budget cuts and benefit caps, on the well-being of disabled children and their families. It concludes by emphasizing the need for more proactive and inclusive approaches to dismantle systemic barriers, ensuring equitable opportunities for disabled children to thrive. The findings provide insights into the broader implications of disability policies and serve as a call for actionable measures to enhance the rights and welfare of disabled children in the United Kingdom.
