In the campaign of May 2008, in the context of the Joint Italian -Russian-Tajik Archaeological pr... more In the campaign of May 2008, in the context of the Joint Italian -Russian-Tajik Archaeological project in South -Western Tajikistan, the necropolis of Gelot-Darnaichi, two adjacent sites in the southern part of the region was excavated. Among the discovered graves was Burial 2, a rich burial of the first phase of the central Asian Oxus civilization or Sapalli culture, (Southern Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, Northern Afghanistan, last centuries of the III-first three quarters of the II millennium B.C.). The tomb belonged to a 35/40 years old woman and was dated to the early phases of the Sapalli culture (last quarter of the III millennium B.C.) . Among its rich furniture the most important find was a stone figurine of an orant with iconographic characters of the "orant" statues of Early Dynastic Mesopotamia, characters which passed in the iconography of the Sapalli statuary. The presence of the figurine, together with that of beads and other objects in semiprecious stones, also attests the relations, albeit indirect through the long distance trade, of the region with the more western areas of The Iranian Plateau, Elam and Mesopotamia. The discovery of Burial 2 and of other contemporary burials in the same necropolis documents the presence of the earliest phases of this culture in Southern Tajikistan, whereas up till now the common opinion of the archaeologists of central Asia was that the Sapalli culture spread to Southern only after the middle of the II millennium B.C. . Further excavation will demonstrate to what extent the earliest phase of the Sapalli culture spread in Southern Tajikistan at the end of the III millennium B.C..
