Research paper thumbnail of Semiosis in cognitive systems: a neural approach to the problem of meaning

Mind & Society, Mar 14, 2007

This paper deals with the problem of understanding semiosis and meaning in cognitive systems. To ... more This paper deals with the problem of understanding semiosis and meaning in cognitive systems. To this aim we argue for a unified two-factor account according to which both external and internal information are nonindependent aspects of meaning, thus contributing as a whole in determining its nature. To overcome the difficulties stemming from this approach we put forward a theoretical scheme based on the definition of a suitable representation space endowed with a set of transformations, and we show how it can be implemented, in the case of a single agent, by a neural network architecture. Numerical experiments conducted on different instances of the latter show that similar representations are developed as a consequence of the fact that these instances are facing a similar semantic task. This allows to model social and environmental influences through a system of interacting agents, each described by a specific implementation of this model architecture.

One of the uses of HUDs is to provide a specific visual interface for pilots in the form of what is called a "tunnel-in-the-sky" (i.e. 3D geometry for the navigation path displayed on a flat screen). According to recent studies the "tunnel-in-the-sky" approach does not provide crucial advantages in comparison with more traditional methods of presenting navigation information to pilots. This paper considers a stereoscopic version of the 3D "tunnel-in-the-sky" realized as an augmented reality (AR) pocket-size system with see-through lightweight AR glasses. The system consists of low-cost items and does not suffer from the drawbacks tied with existing synthetic/enhanced vision systems for pilots. The design of experiments with desktop simulators of different AR pilot's interfaces (2D, 3D and stereo 3D conditions) and their results are described. The results of the experiments prove the effectiveness of the proposed stereo AR solution. Flight test of the prototype of the proposed AR system carried out on Cessna 172 aircraft is also described.

The technology presented here can be employed in complex scenarios and tasks like, for instance, assisting technicians on the field in their job of fixing equipment and machines. AR applications provide a technology that has the potential to support and speed up training, while at the same time increasing performance and effectiveness levels. Some statistics suggest performance improvements up to 30% with involved employees reporting higher levels of engagement. Applications of AR that support technicians in the field have the potential of reducing costs up to 25% throughout quicker maintenance or component substitution, identification and setup of new connections, solution of faults and misconfigurations, with less burden on backend personnel and system res...

The paper provides an overview of the ongoing ANGELS Project (Augmented Network Generating Learning for Safety) co-funded by the European Commission. The ANGELS system is meant to support users to deal with risks in healthcare environments. Specifically, the system provides tools to help users manage specific risk situations by means of AR guided procedures using mobile devices, update data related to the risks in the environment in real time, and assess the understanding of risks and procedures by users and managers. The system is not restricted to any specific environment within a Hospital. Rather it can be employed in different departments. The assessment protocol will include measures of all dimensions of the learning model, usability measures, participants’ satisfaction, and learning outcomes. Results derived from this study may pro...

The current status and future scenarios of three simple use cases are compared with AR-assisted systems deployed with existing (2014) enabling technology. We describe key technology enablers that will be introduced commercially over the next 12 to 24 months to improve performance of systems and strengthen the business case for AR use. We suggest different factors that managers of professional city services can consider when estimating the Return on Investment (ROI) from introduction and use of AR with their IT systems. Finally, we recommend that different stakeholders of the municipal IT systems converge toward a shared vision and make a plan to achieve their goals. The following audiences are considered most likely to benefit from this paper:
