Though complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are highly utilized by cancer patients, little is known about the characteristics of patients seeking IO consultation. Methods: Patients presenting for an outpatient IO consultation completed a CAM use questionnaire, Measure Yourself Concerns and Wellbeing (MYCaW), Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS), Quality of Life Short Form 12 (SF-12), and post-consultation satisfaction item. Results: 2,474 new patient IO consultations were conducted from 9/2009 to 12/2013 and 2367 (96%) completed at least one measure. Patients who received acupuncture in an inpatient hospital environment between December 2014 and December 2015 were asked to complete a modified Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS; 0-10 scale) before and after each visit. Pre- and post-treatment scores were examined for each symptom using paired t tests. A total of 172 inpatients were treated with acupuncture in their hospital beds (257 visits). Thirty percent (n = 51) received at least one additional follow-up treatment (mean visits/patient = 1.5). Completion rate of the modified ESAS after acupuncture was 42%. The most common reasons for not completing the post-treatment ESAS were "patient too drowsy" or "patient fell asleep" (72%). Yet, existing techniques for cell separation are plagued by high reagent and/or instrumentation costs that limit their use in many remote or resource-poor settings, such as field clinics or developing countries. We developed an innovative approach to isolate infectious pathogens from biological fluids using buoyant hollow silica microspheres that function as "molecular buoys" for affinity-based target capture and separation by floatation. In this process, antibody functionalized glass microspheres are mixed with a complex biological sample, such as stool. This study follows on from a recently reported active approach to detach barnacles, which was based on the surface strain of elastomeric materials, by investigating a new, dual-action approach to barnacle detachment using Ecoflex®-based elastomers incorporated with poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based oil additives. The experimental results support the hypothesis that silicone-oil additives reduce the amount of substratum strain required to detach barnacles. The study also de-coupled the two effects of silicone oils (ie surface-activity and alteration of the bulk modulus) and examined their contributions in reducing barnacle adhesion strength. Se tuvieron en cuenta parámetros como la temperatura de vapor, la presión de extracción, la porosidad de lecho, flujo de vapor y temperatura de condensación. Fue utilizado un Diseño Compuesto Central Rotacional para evaluar las zonas óptimas de extracción y el costo que ocasionaría, buscando en todo momento aumentar los rendimientos y disminuir los gastos. Según este diseño, la extracción con menores costos de producción (0.57 Nuevos Soles por mL de aceite esencial) se alcanza cuando las hojas tienen una humedad entre 25 y 30% y se extraen con tiempos entre 98 y 126 min.

Here, the authors report a simple approach to pattern cells on gold patterned silicon substrates with high precision, fidelity, and stability. Cell patterning is achieved by exploiting adsorbed biopolymer orientation to either enhance (gold regions) or impede (silicon oxide regions) cell adhesion at particular locations on the patterned surface. Genetic incorporation of gold binding domains enables C-terminal chemisorption of polypeptides onto gold regions with enhanced accessibility of N-terminal cell binding domains. Network access control mechanisms constitute an increasingly needed service, when communications ... more Network access control mechanisms constitute an increasingly needed service, when communications are becoming more and more ubiquitous thanks to some technologies such as wireless networks or Mobile IP. This paper presents a particular scenario where access rules are based not only on the identity of the different users but also on authorization data related to those users. In order to accomplish this general goal, it will be necessary to add to the traditional system-specific services for authentication and authorization, and also some entities able to manage the information related to identity, roles and permissions. Network access will be based on the 802.1X framework and the Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) architecture, as they constitute the basis for most of the existing proposals for limiting the access to a restricted network. These proposals will be extended making use of an authorization infrastructure based on SAML statements, the RBAC model, and XACML as the main language for expressing authorization policies. The solution that we present in this paper is a consequence of an exhaustive and non-trivial analysis of the different mechanisms that could be used to provide this kind of service. This report presents a study of electrokinetic transport in a series of integrated macro-to nanof... more This report presents a study of electrokinetic transport in a series of integrated macro-to nanofluidic chips that allow for controlled injection of molecular mixtures into high-density arrays of nanochannels. The high-aspect-ratio nanochannels were fabricated on a Si wafer using interferometric lithography and standard semiconductor industry processes, and are capped with a transparent Pyrex cover slip to allow for experimental observations. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to examine the electrokinetic transport of a negatively charged dye (Alexa 488) and a neutral dye (rhodamine B) within nanochannels that varied in width from 35 to 200 nm with electric field strengths equal to or below 2000 V m 21 . In the negatively charged channels, nanoconfinement and interactions between the respective solutes and channel walls give rise to higher electroosmotic velocities for the negatively charged dye than for the neutral dye, towards the negative electrode, resulting in an anomalous separation that occurs over a relatively short distance (,1 mm). Increasing the channel widths leads to a switch in the electroosmotic transport behavior observed in microscale channels, where neutral molecules move faster because the negatively charged molecules are slowed by the electrophoretic drag. Thus a clear distinction between ''nano-'' and ''microfluidic'' regimes is established. We present an analytical model that accounts for the electrokinetic transport and adsorption (of the neutral dye) at the channel walls, and is in good agreement with the experimental data. The observed effects have potential for use in new nano-separation technologies.

We hypothesized that EW would be particularly effective for participants with high levels of depressive symptoms and social support at study entry. Patients (n = 277; 60.6% male) with kidney cancer were randomly assigned to either an expressive (EW) or neutral writing (NW) condition. Intervention outcomes included measures of depressive symptoms (CESD), cancer-related symptoms (MDASI), fatigue (BFI), and sleep disturbances (PSQI) assessed at baseline, 1, 4, and 10 months later. Moderators were measured at baseline. As hypothesized, depressive symptoms and social support moderated intervention efficacy. Baseline data were collected with nurse/patient questionnaires about CAM use and knowledge as part of a multicenter CAM educational clinical trial. Yet, existing techniques for cell separation are plagued by high reagent and/or instrumentation costs that limit their use in many remote or resource-poor settings, such as field clinics or developing countries. We developed an innovative approach to isolate infectious pathogens from biological fluids using buoyant hollow silica microspheres that function as "molecular buoys" for affinity-based target capture and separation by floatation. In this process, antibody functionalized glass microspheres are mixed with a complex biological sample, such as stool. This study follows on from a recently reported active approach to detach barnacles, which was based on the surface strain of elastomeric materials, by investigating a new, dual-action approach to barnacle detachment using Ecoflex®-based elastomers incorporated with poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based oil additives. The experimental results support the hypothesis that silicone-oil additives reduce the amount of substratum strain required to detach barnacles. The study also de-coupled the two effects of silicone oils (ie surface-activity and alteration of the bulk modulus) and examined their contributions in reducing barnacle adhesion strength. Se tuvieron en cuenta parámetros como la temperatura de vapor, la presión de extracción, la porosidad de lecho, flujo de vapor y temperatura de condensación. Fue utilizado un Diseño Compuesto Central Rotacional para evaluar las zonas óptimas de extracción y el costo que ocasionaría, buscando en todo momento aumentar los rendimientos y disminuir los gastos. Según este diseño, la extracción con menores costos de producción (0.57 Nuevos Soles por mL de aceite esencial) se alcanza cuando las hojas tienen una humedad entre 25 y 30% y se extraen con tiempos entre 98 y 126 min.

Here, the authors report a simple approach to pattern cells on gold patterned silicon substrates with high precision, fidelity, and stability. Cell patterning is achieved by exploiting adsorbed biopolymer orientation to either enhance (gold regions) or impede (silicon oxide regions) cell adhesion at particular locations on the patterned surface. Genetic incorporation of gold binding domains enables C-terminal chemisorption of polypeptides onto gold regions with enhanced accessibility of N-terminal cell binding domains. In contrast, the orientation of polypeptides adsorbed on the silicon oxide regions limit the accessibility of the cell binding domains. Network access control mechanisms constitute an increasingly needed service, when communications ... more Network access control mechanisms constitute an increasingly needed service, when communications are becoming more and more ubiquitous thanks to some technologies such as wireless networks or Mobile IP. This paper presents a particular scenario where access rules are based not only on the identity of the different users but also on authorization data related to those users. In order to accomplish this general goal, it will be necessary to add to the traditional system-specific services for authentication and authorization, and also some entities able to manage the information related to identity, roles and permissions. Network access will be based on the 802.1X framework and the Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) architecture, as they constitute the basis for most of the existing proposals for limiting the access to a restricted network. These proposals will be extended making use of an authorization infrastructure based on SAML statements, the RBAC model, and XACML as the main language for expressing authorization policies. The solution that we present in this paper is a consequence of an exhaustive and non-trivial analysis of the different mechanisms that could be used to provide this kind of service. This report presents a study of electrokinetic transport in a series of integrated macro-to nanof... more This report presents a study of electrokinetic transport in a series of integrated macro-to nanofluidic chips that allow for controlled injection of molecular mixtures into high-density arrays of nanochannels. The high-aspect-ratio nanochannels were fabricated on a Si wafer using interferometric lithography and standard semiconductor industry processes, and are capped with a transparent Pyrex cover slip to allow for experimental observations. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to examine the electrokinetic transport of a negatively charged dye (Alexa 488) and a neutral dye (rhodamine B) within nanochannels that varied in width from 35 to 200 nm with electric field strengths equal to or below 2000 V m 21 . In the negatively charged channels, nanoconfinement and interactions between the respective solutes and channel walls give rise to higher electroosmotic velocities for the negatively charged dye than for the neutral dye, towards the negative electrode, resulting in an anomalous separation that occurs over a relatively short distance (,1 mm). Increasing the channel widths leads to a switch in the electroosmotic transport behavior observed in microscale channels, where neutral molecules move faster because the negatively charged molecules are slowed by the electrophoretic drag. Thus a clear distinction between ''nano-'' and ''microfluidic'' regimes is established. We present an analytical model that accounts for the electrokinetic transport and adsorption (of the neutral dye) at the channel walls, and is in good agreement with the experimental data. The observed effects have potential for use in new nano-separation technologies.

We hypothesized that EW would be particularly effective for participants with high levels of depressive symptoms and social support at study entry. Patients (n = 277; 60.6% male) with kidney cancer were randomly assigned to either an expressive (EW) or neutral writing (NW) condition. Intervention outcomes included measures of depressive symptoms (CESD), cancer-related symptoms (MDASI), fatigue (BFI), and sleep disturbances (PSQI) assessed at baseline, 1, 4, and 10 months later. Moderators were measured at baseline. As hypothesized, depressive symptoms and social support moderated intervention efficacy. Baseline data were collected with nurse/patient questionnaires about CAM use and knowledge as part of a multicenter CAM educational clinical trial.
