Formal statistics for testing presence of autocorrelation, asymmetry, and other deviations from normality are applied to these …nancial returns. Dynamic correlations and di¤erent kernel estimations and approximations of the empirical distributions are also under scrutiny. Furthermore, dynamic analysis of mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis are also performed to evaluate time-varying properties in return distributions. Main results reveal di¤erent sources and types of non-normality in the return distributions in both markets. Left fat tails, excess kurtosis, return clustering and unconditional time-varying moments show important deviations from normality. Identi…able volatility cycles in both forex and stock markets are associated to common macro …nancial uncertainty events.

However, counting citations does not account for the fact that citations come from patents of different qualities, and that citations are of variable qualities. We develop a citation index which takes into account the cumulative quality of the citing patents. We apply this index to the 2,139,314 utility patents granted in the U.S. between 1975 and 1999. We study the properties of this index by year and by technological category, and analyse the links between patents.

Learning & Behavior, 2014

Stimuli A and B were two odor solutions (almond and vanilla), and stimulus X was a highly concentrated solution of sucrose. After training, a state of hunger was induced in the rats, and their consumption levels of A and B alone were tested. We found higher test consumption of B than of A (Exp. 1). We interpreted these differences as indicating that the B-X association had become stronger than the A-X association as a result of the training. In Experiment 2, we demonstrated that the presence of X during training was necessary for that effect to appear (Exp. 2). These results give support to the recent proposal that within-compound associations are maintained better by blocked than by intermixed preexposure . We discuss the implications of this difference for explaining the intermixed-blocked perceptual-learning effect.

Microsurgical techniques can reduce skin and graft loss complications; nonetheless, such complications are still highly prevalent. We report a case of self-inflicted penile amputation and describe a nonmicrosurgical technique for replantation. To improve postoperative edema due to venous congestion, we applied medicinal leeches to the penis. The edema quickly resolved, but overlying skin loss occurred, which required superficial debridement. At follow-up the patient had glans re-epithelialization with normal voiding, sensation, and erections. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of nonmicrosurgical penile replantation with leech therapy. UROLOGY 63: 981.e10-981.e12, 2004.

To our knowledge, we report the first male case of a primary mucinous cystadenoma presenting as an enlarging scrotal mass. These lesions are extremely rare and represent only 0.3% of all appendiceal specimens. Because the number of these tumors remains limited, proven treatment regimens and the necessary follow-up have yet to be elucidated. We hope to provide further insight in the monitoring and treatment of these tumors. UROLOGY 70: 1223.e3-1223.e5, 2007.

Experiment 1 showed that one or four nonreinforced presentations of a flavor compound (BX) retarded subsequent conditioning to another compound (AX). However, after eight presentations of BX, conditioning to AX occurred at the same rate as with no preexposure. These results indicate that generalization of LI decreased as the length of preexposure to BX increased. Experiment 2 replicated this effect of reducing generalization, as well as demonstrating that LI actually increased as the length of preexposure to AX increased. Experiment 3 extended the generality of the effect to a procedure in which both BX and AX were preexposed. Experiment 4 demonstrated a similar reducing-generalization effect when generalization of LI from BX to X was assessed. All of these data are consistent with the notion that prolonged preexposure to BX enhances its discriminability. Different learning mechanisms that might be responsible for this perceptual learning effect are discussed.
