the rubáiyát, in Irish, and wonders why no one else has bothered up until now. Do Irish-language poets shy away from non-native genres, from non-native ways of experiencing the world? The haiku may have entered the Irish literary canon, perhaps even the tanka. But can the rubáiyát ever be anything more than an academic exercise for Irish-language poets?

In this short investigation, I'm going to examine some statements by contemporary Japanese haijin, found in The Earth Afloat, an anthology of recent Japanese haiku, edited by Kōko Katō, translated with commentary by Kōko Katō & David Burleigh (Kadokawa Shoten, 2021). Kōko Katō herself says something in her Introduction which sets the tone nicely for this overview: When two different things are placed together in one haiku, the result may be fresh imagery. Cutting may also create a wordless blank space at the heart of the poem which has its own particular beauty, known as yohaku no bi. . .
