This paper describes the growth submodule of OSYAQ, an organ-speci®c yield and quality model. The model input includes daily average air temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration and incoming global radiation. The major processes implemented in the growth submodule are photosynthesis, maintenance and growth respiration, recycling of senescent plant material and remobilization of reserves. The model calculates separately yield formation for stem, leaf and ear. Available assimilates are partitioned to the various plant parts according to the concept of relative sink strength. Calibration and validation were based on a 2-year and a 1-year ®eld trial, respectively, carried out under long-and short-day conditions with Lolium multi¯orum ssp. gaudini. These tests indicated a good performance of the model for the long-day growth but showed some de®ciencies for regrowth after defoliation under conditions of extreme water shortage. The paper discusses these results and possible improvements. It concludes that the growth module of OSYAQ provides a suitable tool for the analysis of the effects of varied stem-to-leaf ratios on yield.

Research paper thumbnail of Comprehensive Evaluation of Virulence and Resistance Data: A New Analysis Tool

VAT provides a range of methods for the analysis of plant pathosystems. The techniques are applicable to other binary data sets that are organized in large two-way tables, e.g., molecular marker data. The main features are data entry, descriptive tools, and inference statistics by resampling. About 50 well-established or newly developed indices allow a detailed diversity analysis of sexually and asexually reproducing populations. VAT facilitates a comprehensive, effective, and logically consistent evaluation and presentation of virulence and resistance data. A translation option simplifies the comparison of results from differently coded pathotypes. The software package comes with a detailed manual and is freely available on the internet at tau.ac.il/lifesci/departments/plant_s/members/kosman/VAT.html and at va-tipp.de .

Research paper thumbnail of Two statistical tests for meiotic breakpoint analysis

PubMed, Feb 1, 1995

Although BPA does not provide estimates of genetic distances between markers, it efficiently locates new markers on already defined dense maps, when likelihood analysis becomes cumbersome or the sample size is small. However, until now no assessments of statistical significance have been available for evaluating the possibility that the results of a BPA were produced by chance. In this paper, we propose two statistical tests to determine whether the size of a sample and its genetic information content are sufficient to distinguish between "no linkage" and "linkage" of a marker mapped by BPA to a certain region. Both tests are exact and should be conducted after a BPA has assigned the marker to an interval on the map. Applications of the new tests are demonstrated by three examples: (1) a synthetic data set, (2) a data set of five markers on human chromosome 8p, and (3) a data set of four markers on human chromosome 17q.

This Is the third listing replacing and increasing the former listing roughly by one fifth. However, in order to save space this printed version contains DNA sequence information only. The complete compilation Is now available in machine readable form from the EMBL data library (ECD release 6). After deletion of all detected overlaps a total of 1 492 282 individual bp Is found to be determined till the beginning of 1991. This corresponds to a total of 31.62 % of the entire E.coll chromosome consisting of about 4,720 kbp. This number may actually be higher by some extra 2,5 % derived from lysogenlc bacteriophage lambda and various DNA sequences already received for statistical purposes only.
