Total sulfated polysaccharides (TSP) were extracted by enzymatic digestion and fractioned on DEAE-cellulose column. The fractions with the highest yield from each species were further studied (SP-Am; SP-Gb and SP-Sf). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) demonstrated specific signs of sulfate on three species. In addition, SP-Am presented the lowest molecular weight (<100 kDa) by gel permeation chromatography. The cell viability of SP was determined by the change of the Vero cell morphology. The degree of antiviral activity was expressed as percent inhibition of the herpesvirus. The selectivity index and IC 50 were als...

Assim, a fotobiografia é analisada segundo perspectivas simbólicas, narrativas e retóricas.

We determined the prevalence of rotavirus A (RVA), C (RVC), and H (RVH) in pigs on a Brazilian farm. Samples were screened by reverse-transcription (RT)-PCR, and samples positive for RVA were genotyped by PCR amplification and sequencing analysis. Of the 329 fecal samples analyzed, 102 (30.9%) were positive for RV, 25 (7.6%) contained RVA only, 32 (9.7%) contained RVC only, and 31 (9.4%) contained RVH only. Co-circulation, the presence of ≥ 2 RVs in a sample, was detected in 14 (4.2%) samples. Of the 15 animals with diarrhea, 6 (40%) were positive for RV, and of the 314 asymptomatic animals, 96 (30.6%) were positive for RV; there was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups ( p = 0.441). Genotyping of RVA strains showed co-circulation of genotypes G1, G3, G9-P[8]-I1, and I2-E1. Phylogenetic analysis showed that some of the RVA genotypes found in pigs had high pe...

The ones of these which are available nationally can be divided into two categories, according to what they have attempted to measure: (1) those focusing on general personality characteristics and (2) those focusing on artistic taste nnd talent. I n the first category are such instruments as: ( a ) Goodenough’s Draw-A-Man Test (1926) and Lantz’s Eusel Age Scale (1955) which are used to measure general intelligence in children as well as some aspect of psychological adjustment; (b) Murray’s Thematic Apperception Test (1943), Buck’s House-Tree-Person Test (1947), and more than a score of others which attempt to reveal the examinee’s idiosyncratic view of himself and the world (Hammer, 1958); and (c) Welsh’s Figure Preference Test (1951) which at. tempts to measure a general creativity factor that pervades all aspects of a person’s life. This paper, however, does not concern itself with the foregoing uses of drawings for general personality appraisal or for measurement of general intelligence. Rather, it focuses on the instruments in the second category, such as Graves’ Design Judginent Test (1948) and Iqnauber’s Art Ability Tests (1935) which have been used for such purposes as determining aesthetic sensitivity or “good taste” and predicting students’ success in a r t courses. Although the past 35 years have seen the publication of a variety of these kinds of tests,

Research paper thumbnail of Aerobic bacterial profile and antibiotic resistance in patients with diabetic foot infections

Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical, 2015

Methods: This prospective study included 41 patients with diabetic foot lesions. Bacteria were isolated from foot lesions, and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method and/or broth method [minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)]. Results: The most common location of ulceration was the toe (54%), followed by the plantar surface (27%) and dorsal portion (19%). A total of 89 bacterial isolates were obtained from 30 patients. The infections were predominantly due to Grampositive bacteria and polymicrobial bacteremia. The most commonly isolated Gram-positive bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus, followed by Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The most commonly isolated Gram-negative bacteria were Proteus spp. and Enterobacter spp., followed by Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp., and Citrobacter spp. Nine cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) had cefoxitin resistance, and among these MRSA isolates, 3 were resistant to vancomycin with the MIC technique. The antibiotic imipenem was the most effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and gentamicin was effective against Gram-negative bacteria. Conclusions: The present study confi rmed the high prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens in diabetic foot ulcers. It is necessary to evaluate the different microorganisms infecting the wound and to know the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of the isolates from the infected wound. This knowledge is crucial for planning treatment with the appropriate antibiotics, reducing resistance patterns, and minimizing healthcare costs.

Subsequent treatment with sodium azide led to the respective azide. Reaction of the azide with phenylacetylene and 2-hydroxy-3-butyne and oxidation of the resulting alcohol with MnO 2 resulted in three triazolic compounds that were evaluated in vitro for their antiviral activity against human metapneumovirus (HMPV). 5,5-Diphenyl-3-[3-(4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)propyl]imidazolidine-2,4-dione was the most active of the three compounds tested, with selectivity index of 129.87, even higher than ribavirin, the control substance. The three compounds showed activity in the early stages of viral replication presenting virucidal activity and binding to cellular receptors, preventing the adsorption of viral particles. These compounds showed higher activity in both experiments, inhibiting 98.3% of infection as virucidal and 98.9% when interacting with cellular receptors. Furthermore, they showed 73.8% of activity during the penetration of HMPV particles into cells. The derivative 3-{3-[4-(1-hydroxyethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl]propyl}-5,5-diphenylimidazolidine-2,4-dione presented a mild anti-HMPV activity, with selectivity index of 2.74. 3-[3-(4-acetyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)propyl]-5,5-diphenylimidazolidine-2,4-dione inhibited less than 50% of HMPV replication.

Malignant dysphagia usually represents an ominous clinical symptom of upper digestive tract cance... more Malignant dysphagia usually represents an ominous clinical symptom of upper digestive tract cancer. Esophageal carcinoma is the most common tumor causing malignant dysphagia [1–3]. Radical surgery has a central role in the curative treatment usually in conjunction with chemo or radiation therapy [4–6]. Despite advances in the field of multimodality treatment of the esophageal cancer, global long-term overall survival remains low [7]. Malignant mesenchymal tumors of the esophagus including liposarcoma are rare causes of dysphagia and represent a clinical challenge from diagnosis to definitive treatment [8]. Usually, these tumors grow to a large size causing dysphagia and a constellation of grave respiratory problems. The rarity of the disease and the limited clinical data reported in the literature result in clinical issues such as diagnostic dilemmas, interpretation of clinical and pathologic finds, different surgical approaches, role of adjuvant therapies, and prognosis.
