Aim: To determine the common causes of maternal deaths and to study their clinicopathological profile. Materials and Methods: The present study included series of 16 cases of maternal deaths from January 2018 to June 2020. The study was conducted at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. The post mortem examination in all these deaths was conducted as per institutional policy. The external, in-situ examination along with histological findings are studied in each case. Results: The study group comprised of 16 cases, in the range of 21 to 37 years with a mean age of 27 years. Nine deaths were in antepartum, while seven in postpartum period and all the deliveries took place in hospital. Amongst these 16 deaths, 11 were brought dead whi...

It presents as tumour-like periarticular deposits of calcium in hip, shoulder and elbow regions. Idiopathic tumoral calcinosis (TC) is different from the secondary calcium deposition associated with terminal renal diseases, hypervitaminosis D and milk alkali syndrome with disturbed calcium metabolism. There are no demonstrable abnormalities of calcium metabolism in Idiopathic TC. TC predominantly affects children and young adults and is rare in old age. When TC occurs in old patients, possibility of other differential diagnoses need to be considered and ruled out with the help of morphological examination of the tumorous swelling. Two cases of TC that occurred in 65 and 75 year old females respectively were initially diagnosed on the basis of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) findings of the swellings and later confirmed by histopathological examination of the excised tissue. Diagnostic biopsies were avo...

The incidence of tuberculosis in India has dramatically increased and contributing to it is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Various diagnostic methods are available for detection of tubercular bacilli. Only full proof criteria for diagnosis of TB is to demonstrate the bacilli from affected tissue. This study was planned in extra pulmonary tuberculosis cases to evaluate different staining methods for demonstration of mycobacterium on FNAC material. To evaluate efficacy of Cartridge Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (CBNAAT) in the initial cytodiagnosis of Tubercular Lymphadenitis 147 clinically suspected cases of extra pulmonary tuberculosis mainly TB lymphadenitis who attended cytology OPD were selected irrespective of age and sex. FNAC was performed. Slides stained for PAP, ZN and concentration bleach. Material remained in hub wa...

There are many extranodal sites of filariasis like thyroid, soft tissue, ascitic fluid etc. Breast is one of the unusual sites where this parasite presents as a lump and may mimic malignancy. Demonstration of filarial worm in fine needle aspiration plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis and institution of specific treatment. We report a case of breast lump in 40 years female that on fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) revealed gravid filarial worm with inflammatory reaction. The lump resolved on antifilarial treatment. High index of suspicion of parasites should be kept in mind while interpreting FNAC from lumps and nodules at any body site.

Serous carcinoma is often diagnosed in the sixth and seventh decade, while the mean age for high-grade tumours is 63 year. It’s not only the non-specific symptoms like vague abdominal pain, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, but also the unusual presentation which is responsible for delayed diagnosis. This diagnostic delay can become the reason for increased mortality, despite advances in surgical management and chemotherapy. Here, authors discuss a case of 60-year-old postmenopausal women who presented with a huge pelvi-peritoneal mass and with grossly normal ovaries. Considering clinical findings and histomorphology, the possibility of malignant mesothelioma was considered as the first differential diagnosis; however extensive sampling of ovaries and supportive immunohistochemical markers helped us to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. The pre...

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the utility of serum LDH and chloroform inhibited serum LDH in the diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia and to observe if this can be used to differentiate megaloblastic anemia from iron deficiency anemia and hemolytic anemia. Methods: The present study was carried out on 75 patients of anemia categorised on bone marrow examination (into megaloblastic and non-megaloblastic anaemia) to evaluate the efficacy of total serum LDH levels and LDH isoenzyme pattern in the diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia. About 25 healthy adults were taken as controls. Results: In megaloblastic anemia, total serum LDH level was found to be increased to about nineteen folds and in hemolytic anemia it was found to increased four folds as compared to normal. On statistical analysis this increased total serum LDH level i...

It was previously classified as Hamartomas, however now it belong to a family of tumors collectively referred to as PEComas. Very Few cases of extra renal AML arising from uterine cervix have been reported in the literature. Angiomyolipomais usually associated with tuberous sclerosis. We report a case of Angiomyolipoma occurring at a rare site of uterine cervix, without evidence of Tuberous Sclerosis.
