Through the study of vocabulary, we can discover which areas of experience are involved - like culture, economics, politics and so on - or carry a particular charge for a community's speech. But the lexis of a language suggests important reflections about the contact with other cultures and languages. The interaction with immediate neighbours or with the wider worlds in different periods or geographical areas implies a very large kinds of transfers. Whatever the origin, words are subject to complex problems of change. Our purpose is to study some questions concerning the transfer of Italian words into French area, in different periods, in order to show several types of adaptation both in grammatical and in semantic fields. The linguistic transfer incorporates the phenomenon of the borrowing including derivational problems; it also implies a study of etymology referring to the history of the form and meaning of words, and, necessarily, to the field of study as a whole. Two ways are involved: one "external" that concerns the historical characteristics of linguistic transfer (as origin, duration, semantic evolution in both synchronic and diachronic terms); the other one "internal" concerning grammatical and semantic transcategorization, and phenomena like "re-borrowing", double borrowing and certain complex questions of etymology. A particular importance involves the problem of the proper name (as toponomastic and onomastic) as a source of borrowing in the French language, and its transformation into a common noun, both in the literary and scientific fields. In addition it is traced a brief set of terms concerning the influence of the Italian culture in the 19 th and 20 th centuries.
