I have some comments 1. What is the new knowledge the authors are presenting with regards to knowledge on tourism and Chinhoyi caves in particular-I encourage the authors to do a bit more reading to establish and acknowledge what has already been written and how their paper contributes to it. 2. The abstract seems to imply that they used secondary sources, key informant interviews and site visit-though this is not so clearly articulated 3. The key words should include geographical location. try not to use the term tourism so many times in key words-use words that can summarise the article /or themes that the article is exploring

Most national parks in Southern Africa are managed by their states. Before 2007, Gonarezhou National Park was managed by the Zimbabwe Parks Management and Wildlife Authority, which faced challenges in maintaining its biodiversity, community relations and infrastructure. However, in 2017 the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Zimbabwe Parks Management and Wildlife Authority formed an innovative partnership under the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust (GCT). This study examines the relationship between GCT management, Gonarezhou National Park stakeholders and communities as well as the impact of the relationship on biodiversity and ecosystems. The study also highlights challenges faced and lessons learned in managing Gonarezhou as a protected area. To obtain the information, key informant interviews, Landsat satellite imagery, secondary data from previous studies and government sources were utilized. The results indicate that the concerted efforts of the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust to manage the park are starting to bear fruit in improving biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management and engaging communities. However, challenges such as governance obstacles, problematic stakeholder management, maintaining trust in community relations, ensuring sustainability, managing the adverse impacts of climate change and human-wildlife conflicts must still be navigated to ensure the park's sustainable management. Notwithstanding challenges, we argue that a partnership arrangement such as the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust is a desirable model that can be applied in national parks in Zimbabwe and Africa for better biodiversity management and tourism.

Research paper thumbnail of Differentiations in Women’s Land Tenure Experiences: Implications for Women’s Land Access and Tenure Security in Sub-Saharan Africa

Land, Jan 22, 2019

T... more Most literature on land tenure in sub-Saharan Africa has presented women as a homogenous group. This study uses evidence from Ghana, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe to show that women have differentiated problems, needs, and statuses in their quest for land access and tenure security. It illustrates how women-to-women differences influence women's access to land. By investigating differentiations in women's land tenure in the three countries, the study identifies multiple and somewhat interlinked ways in which differentiations exist in women's land tenure. It achieved some key outcomes. The findings include a matrix of factors that differentiate women's land access and tenure security, a visualisation of women's differentiation in land tenure showing possible modes for actions, and an adaptable approach for operationalising women's differentiation in land tenure policies (among others). Using these as evidence, it argues that women are a highly differentiated gender group, and the only thing homogenous in the three cases is that women are heterogeneous in their land tenure experiences. It concludes that an emphasis on how the differentiation among women allows for significant insight to emerge into how they experience tenure access differently is essential in improving the tenure security of women. Finally, it makes policy recommendations.

Urban Development, Growth and Governance Issues: Historically, urban local governments in Zimbabwe tended to have wide ranging capacity to provide a broad range of services to their populations. Delivery of these services and maintenance of the related infrastructure was efficient. This was mainly because of the relatively slow rate of urbanization. Urban settlement growth was kept under check through rigorous and tight development control and control of rural-urban migration. The changes brought about by national independence created unprecedented service, delivery and management and governance challenges. Virtually all-Zimbabwean urban settlements are growing and expanding at an unprecedented rate which raises serious questions of sustainability, environment, infrastructure, poverty and go...

Land governance and gender: the tenure-gender nexus in land management and land policy, 2021

Le... more Land inheritance is an important process through which women negotiate access to the resource. Legal pluralism renders land inheritance a complex process for those who rely on inheritance as a source of land. This chapter uses the case study of Lesotho to highlight how legal pluralism influences women's land inheritance in Lesotho. The research applied qualitative research approaches using both primary and secondary data to analyse the status of women's access to land in Lesotho. Primary data collection was undertaken in Maseru and Mafeteng using key informant interviews, focus group discussions and field visits. Key informants included women's organizations, government representatives, Habitat for Humanity staff and beneficiaries, private sector, paralegals, traditional leaders, community councils, widows and land right organizations. Focus group discussions focused on the community council and paralegals, and the Land Advocacy reference group. Secondary data was obtain...

Initiatives to secure women’s land tenure in customary areas are undermined by the social embeddedness of the rights, patriarchy, lack of awareness by the communities, legal pluralism, and challenges of recording the rights. As pressure on customary land tenure increases due to foreign and local land-based investment interests, land titling initiatives, tourism, and mineral resources exploration, communities and women within them are at real risk of losing their land, the basis of their livelihoods. Women stand to lose more as they hold tenuous land rights in customary land tenure areas. Accordingly, this study analyzes case studies of selected mapping initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa to interrogate the extent to which mapping both as a cadastral exercise and emerging practice in the ...
