Sleep Science, 2021

Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may show signs and symptoms of altered swallowing fun... more Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may show signs and symptoms of altered swallowing function since repetitive episodes of OSA may cause hypoxia (decreased oxygen concentration in the blood) and hypercapnia (increased carbon dioxide concentration in the blood), as well as neuromuscular changes in the tissues involved, including the pharynx. This study aims to analyze whether patients with OSA show signs and symptoms of altered swallowing function. A literature search was performed in the PubMed, LILACS, Medline, Scopus, and SciELO databases by using the following search strategy: ("dysphagia") or ("deglutition disorders") and ("obstructive sleep apnea") or ("obstructive sleep apnea syndrome"). The included articles were sorted by authors, year, country, journal of publication, and type of study, as well as analyzed according to the objectives, case series, OSA and swallowing assessment methods, results and conclusions. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, ten articles published in medicine, dentistry and physiology journals between 1999 and 2018 were selected. The analysis of the selected articles showed that the number of participants and group structuring vary according to the study and instrumental and objective exams are used to assess swallowing and sleep in most articles. Also, the results show that groups of patients with OSA can present altered swallowing reflex, altered latency time and inspiratory suppression time, and presence of premature posterior escape, residues, penetration and aspiration. Premature posterior escape was the most frequent sign found. In conclusion, patients with OSA may show signs and symptoms of altered swallowing function.

Preventive measures for respiratory disorders can be used by the population, as well as early self-diagnosis and immediate search for treatment based on knowledge of this subject. Objective this study developed a weblog on the breathing function targeting young people and analyzed the statistical data of views until the present moment. Methods The weblog was developed, and the stages of analysis, design, development and implementation were followed. All texts were evaluated by the Flesch Reading Index to verify the language, and the statistical data were analyzed by the number of views, countries with the highest number of views, search terms used, most viewed pages and number of comments on the blog. Results Issues related to the breathing function and those most cited in the literature were selected. The blog was structured using pages with content and curiosities, with texts with minimum readability of 50%, and was made available on the internet by means of the Wordpress tool. The statistics showed an increase in the number of visits after August 2015; the countries with the highest number of views were Brazil, United States and Portugal; the search terms used were unknown or related to mouth breathing; the most viewed pages related to mouth breathing and the comments addressed questions on mouth breathing, reports and compliments. Conclusion The blog "How do I breathe?," aimed at young people and containing information about the breathing function, was developed and is available on the

The term dysphagia is defined as a symptom referring to difficulty during the swallowing process,... more The term dysphagia is defined as a symptom referring to difficulty during the swallowing process, caused byesophageal or oropharyngeal dysfunction, which may induce nutritional and hydration insufficiency. Thus, the speech therapy proceeding is important, but a specific training is necessary for the efficient performance of the treatment of dysphagic individuals. With the increasing development of technology in the telecommunication area, teaching transmitted by information and communication technologies has become possible. The aim of this study is to verify the effectiveness of distance learning, associated to presential class, of the speech therapy students learning process of the Bauru School of Dentistry – USP. The participants in this research were students who had the discipline in person and others who had access to activities and contents in the Moodle Platform in addition to face-to-face teaching. All students answered a questionnaire before and after the course, with obje...
