However, considering that individuals with Down syndrome (DS) present with a faster decline in biological aging, an investigation on MQI in individuals with DS is necessary. The aims of this present cross-sectional study were to compare (1) MQI between adolescents with and without DS and (2) evaluate laboratory versus field-based estimates of MQI. Methods Fifty-six adolescents were recruited and separated into two groups: DS (n=30, 13 boys, 17 girls; age: 12.38 ± 3.07 years) and a control (non-DS; n = 26, 9 boys, 17 girls; age: 12.46 ± 2.88 years). Laboratory MQI was derived from the ratio of grip strength to arm muscle mass (in kg) measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Field-based MQI was quantified from the ratio of hand grip strength (HGS) to body mass index (BMI). For statistical analyses, a two-way ANOVA was conducted for group comparisons, and a Pea...

It is observed that dance delivers a valuable contribution to the development of bodily motor functions. Objectives. To evaluate the static and dynamic balance in children with Down syndrome-DS enrolled in a Dance Workshop for people with disabilities. Methods. Balance tests proposed by Oliveira (2009) were used on 14 children with DS aged between 8 and 12 (mean 9.36 ± 1.2 years.). Who has been practicing dance for not less than two years? A Control Group was formed with 14 children with DS who do not dance with the same age group (mean 9.43 ± 1.09 years). Results. While the maximum effect of the proposed tests is 12 points and 42.08% of the sample obtained a score below 5. It is considered relevant the percentage of 57.13% of the participants to have scored five, six, or seven. It can be stated that dance proved too significant a considerable means of stimulating balance development in children with DS. It was considering the results regarding the CG that pointed to 42.25% of the sample with a score of zero and 57.25% with a rating of 4, 3, or 2. Conclusion. The constant and systematic dance practice can present a considerable development in the balance of children with DS. This favors their inclusion and permanence in physical exercise and sports programs.

Background This study was designed to compare the cardiovascular and nitric oxide (NO) responses ... more Background This study was designed to compare the cardiovascular and nitric oxide (NO) responses to maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) with different muscle groups (leg press [LEP] and isometric handgrip [IHG] exercise) of adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) and age-matched non-DS peers. We also aimed to compare the absolute and relative IHG strength between groups. MethodsEleven adolescents with DS (14.1 ± 1.0 years) and ten without DS (13.7 ± 1.25 years)participants performed two experimental sessions of LEP and IHG exercises: 1) familiarization session and 2) 3 attempts x 5-sec contraction at MVIC with 3-min rest interval. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and NO were collected at rest, immediately post-exercise session, and 10-min post-exercise. Results There were no differences for cardiovascular and NO responses between groups for MVIC test using different muscle groups. However, DS group displayed a lower but not significantly cardiovascular response at rest an...

Thirty-three older (75.3±1.3 years old) were allocated to a non-exercise control (CG, n=11), prehypertensive (PHG, n=10), and hypertensive (HG, n=12) groups. PHG and HG performed a total of 8 sets of 1-min bilateral contractions at 30% maximal voluntary isometric contraction, each separated by 1-minute rest-pause. IHG training was performed for 8-week, 3 times a week on non-consecutive days. Systolic BP (SBP) and heart rate (HR) decreased post-training on PHG (-10 mm Hg; -5 bpm) and HG (-16 mm Hg; -9 bpm), respectively. Diastolic BP (DBP) decreased for HG only (-9 mm Hg) (P < 0.05). In addition, the decrease in BP occurred in parallel to a better redox balance and increased bioavailability of nitric oxide in PHG and HG (P < 0.05). Also, the variables that most...

The collection took place through the Teachers' Field Diary and the interview with the child's mother. The pedagogical intervention lasted 15 months and took place at the swimming and dance workshops at the Catholic University of Brasilia, with two weekly classes in each workshop lasting 30 min each. The intervention was based on Henri Wallon's theory of emotions and sought freedom of expression, body experience, and the discovery of a body marked by disease and, in many moments, disrespected in its possibilities. At the end of the intervention, mobility, and range of motion gains were observed in motor terms, which were compromised due to the instability caused by the progressive disease. However, there were significant gains regarding self-esteem, which were relevant and significantly contributed to a better quality of life of the child.
