To provide primary care and specialty services, advanced practice nurses are seeking prescriptive authority. This article examines the historical development of medical prescriptive authority, challenges four commonly held assumptions regarding prescriptive authority for nurses, and discusses how medicine's dominance in prescriptive authority for nurses, and discusses how medicine's dominance in prescriptive authority relates to nursing's struggle for power and autonomony. Nurses must direct their political and educational activities toward developing true structural and attitudinal autonomy in all aspects of nursing practice.

In the bulk, the interplay between the external field perpendicular to the gas plane and the spin-orbit coupling leads to two branches of states that, within the same energy window, have different cyclotron radii. For the edge states, surface reflection generates hybrid states with the two cyclotron radii. We analyze the spectrum and spin structure of these states and present a semiclassical picture of them.

Mothers exceeded fathers in self-efficacy, confidence, satisfaction, and support. For mothers, stress and self-efficacy were inversely related, and self-efficacy postpartum was positively associated with partner relationship, satisfaction, confidence, and support. Forfathers, self-efficacyand stress were not related, and self-efficacy at 4 months was associated with confidence and life situation. Self-efficacy and stress as predictor variables modestly explained adaptation to parenthood. Gender predicted confidence in parenting, and the interaction of gender and self-efficacy predicted support for parenting. Strategiesforassessingandenhancingparentingself-efficacyand implicationsforfuture research are discussed.

Included studies compared osmotic, bulk-forming, stimulant or emollient laxatives, lubricating agents, or dietary measures with placebo, no treatment, or alternative treatments in children ⩽18 years of age who had functional constipation. Exclusion criteria included studies of children with psychiatric disease, organic constipation, exclusively non-retentive faecal incontinence, or mental handicap. Outcomes included treatment success (defined by individual studies) or defecation frequency. Medline and EMBASE/Excerpta Medica (to Dec 2007) and reference lists were searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs), comparative clinical trials (CCTs), or crossover studies. 28 studies (n = 1912, duration of follow-up 2 d to 12 mo) met the selection criteria: …
